AZ Solar Concepts bid was surprisingly low. They were 15% lower than the second place bidder (Sun Valley Solar), who was about 20% lower than high bidder (Perfect Power). All three contractors were made aware of the fact that we had an employer incentive that would be paid upon completion of the project ($1,500). When I called the second place bidder, he asked me what the winning bidder had bid. I told the approximate number, to which he responded, there is no way they can do it for that. They will be loosing money at that price. That was my second clue of what was to come.
I was told that there was a three to four month lead time to get the plans, submit for permits, obtain the materials, and install the system.
Three months after I signed the paperwork, I obtained the drawings for the project detailing panel location and all other pertinent details for installation. Upon opening these drawings I noticed that they were incorrect and panel placement was not efficient as the bottom row of panels would be shaded during the winter months. This was a fact that I had learned from the other two bidding contractors during the bid process. I promptly called my salesman, Greg, who referred me to Danielle in their office. I explained the situation to Danielle, and she quickly corrected the problem and sent me revised project drawings correcting the panel placement to move the bottom row of panels on the main portion of my roof and place them other sections of the roof. The new design closely resembled the other drawing I received from the bidding contractors. I assumed this situation was put to bed.
Three months later after hearing nothing from AZ Solar Concepts I contacted them asking about my installation. They told me they had been trying to get a hold of me for a couple of months, but I had no voicemails or emails from them. After agreeing to disagree on whether they had made an attempt to contact me, they set up my installation for three weeks out. They did not show up the first day of the install, when I called to check they stated they had got hung up but would be out the next day. I asked them if they need me to be onsite as I could not take two days off for this and I was home for the 1st day and they said no. They should be fine.
Two days later, after all the panels were installed, I noticed that the panels were installed per the original plans and not the revised plans. I called my project manager, Steve, about the issue. He told me he would come out with a device called a 'Solametric Eye' to check on the shading issue the other bidders had talked about. He told me he would be out the next Friday. Friday came and went and Steve was a no call no show.
A week later a man named Trent from K & B Design called me, on behalf of AZ Solar Concepts to do a 'total load count' on my electric panel. K & B Design it turns out is the design company that AZ Solar Concepts used to design my system. I asked him about the shading issue and he told me he would run the calcs on my system referencing the two story house next door. He responded by saying that my system 'would experience shading earlier than normal between November and January (when the days are the shortest).
One month after the system is installed I contact AZ Solar Concepts about getting my system inspected by the city and turned on to generate power. They tell me that they are waiting of the city to have an opening.
One month after my first call, I call again to ask about getting my system inspected and turned on. They say they are still waiting on the city and have left me several messages. I again told them I have not received any communication from them.
Another month later I call AZ Solar to inquire about getting my system inspected and turned on. This time they told me they are still waiting on the city of Glendale to return their calls for an inspection. Problem with this is that I live in the city of Peoria. They apologized for the mistake and told me they would contact Peoria immediately. The next day they called back to inform me of my pending inspection in two days.
The system is inspected, green tagged, and turned on to generate power.
The next day a member of the new system team came out (forgot his name) to show me the system, how it works, install the monitoring and answer any questions. When I asked him about the shading issue he was very friendly about it and was sympathetic to the situation. He told me he knew the CFO well and would discuss it with him. He assured me that they would make it right.
Two months later I get an email from the CFO of AZ Solar Concepts asking me to sign off on Lease Exhibit C. Exhibit C is the sign off of satisfactory completion of the system. I explained to him what was going on and how I was dissatisfied with the install and the communication I had received from his company. He apologized and promised that he would get someone in touch with me very soon to resolve all the open issues.
Two weeks later I get an email from a new project manager telling me they would stand behind Sun Power's production guarantee. I responded to this statement by saying I was not looking for them to stand behind a guarantee. I wanted them to install the system that I agreed to. I wanted my system generating power to it fullest extent.
One week later Steve writes me an email and tells me he will sit down with the CFO and draft an additional letter.
Eight months later I received a letter from the CFO (Dan Beach) threatening a lien on my house if I did not pay for the system as installed. After this I hired an attorney and they worked out the details.
It turns out that my system is generating power within the SunPower guaranteed range so I am out of luck. I have run the numbers and my system generates 33% less power than guaranteed in the winter months (November to January), but is generating enough above the guarantee in the other months. I figure that AZ Solar Concepts mistake on the install is costing me about $100 per year. Not a huge amount but enough that I am still angry about it...
We would (and have) recommended Arizona Solar Concepts to our children and to our friends.
My experience with this company, Arizona Solar Concepts, was miserable. I have never dealt with a company who treated me, a customer, with such disdain. They do not understand the basic concept of communicating with a client. As I have said, after a month of inactivity I called requesting an update. It took a threat to the CEO before they would even respond and the reason behind this is that they had done nothing on my project for over a month. All in all, it took four days shy of seven months from signing the contract to having an operating system. Seven months and I ended up with a system that is less than advertised.
There are lots of people, I imagine lots of good people, in the solar panel business these days. The management at AzSolCons are not good people. I would not recommend these people to Osama bin Laden if he was discovered alive and living in my neighborhood. ,
