A plumber diagnosed the problem and after checking Angie's List, I found Action Automated Fire & Safety. The owner "Al" returned my call after leaving a message at their main number.
Because water had been turned off to the house and I was away for a few days, there wasn't too much urgency (but I did want the problem resolved fairly quickly so that the plants didn't die and the spool didn't evaporate). Al called a good friend of mine so that they coud coordinate their meeting at the house.
My friend told me that Al really knew his subject and that it only took about 30-minutes to replace the valve. He called me so that I could talk to Al and get my questions resolved. After testing the system, they buttoned everything back up.
I'm grateful that Al knew what he was doing and am convinced that he knows his stuff.
