The Dwell Well owner, Greg, and his people were all very helpful and willing to offer advice on the many choices needed for our kitchen remodel. They were able to bring in installers, tile, plumbing and electricians in a timely manner. All work was completed without problems. The only correction needed was the microwave height which they fixed without issue.
Greg uses a budget model for pricing. He estimates the cost of each task and then bills according to actual cost. We were very pleased to see the bills at or lower than the estimates.
Greg also has a designer who has great experience with room remodeling software. The designer worked with us to sketch out the specifications, cabinet choices, sizes and features. Using 3D prints, we were able to clearly envision what the final design would look like. Very helpful.
The only downside would be the choice of cabinets. Greg only installs cabinets from one vendor which is Canyon Creek from Oregon. These are good quality cabinets but pricey.
.
We had them remove the wall and slider of an exisiting bedroom closet (extra points for their donation of the doors to Habitate for Humanity). They built a new wall 14and quot; out into the room with a paneled pocket door.
They pulled plumbing from the main bathroom through the attic, and core drilled the concrete slab for the toilet drain, They excavated outside the house for the waste to our sewer line. Then they re-tile the new bath floor to match the adjacent room.
They provided and installed the toilet, the corner lavatory-vanity, with a point-of-use hot water heater,and the over head medicine cabinet. They installed a fan-vent light fixture overhead, with wall switches and a G.F.I. electrical receptacle, painted the new bath room, and all the walls in the adjacent bedroom part of or affected by the construction.
They took care to put down paper and cardboard to protect all floors, they took down and then rehung adjacent curtains, to keep them clean. They swept and removed all trash. on top of this, most of the project was completed while we were 2,500 miles away in our primary residence. Greg Van Dam of Dwell Well , kept in constant contact, sending us emails with progress photos of work several times.
I can't think of enough nice things to say. During the punch list walk through today I teased Greg that my review would be so good, that Angie's readers would wonder if I'm his mother! ( not)
"We were quite surprised by this review since the homeowner expressed satisfaction and appreciation when we closed the job. It seems he was satisfied with the work Dwell Well did, but experienced frustration with Habitat for Humanity and the painting contractor he contacted. His negative comments primarily reflect his experience with Habitat for Humanity and the painting contractor and will hopefully be seen as such. We generally recommend donating old door/window units to Habitat for Humanity because the homeowner gets a tax deduction receipt and the units don't go to a landfill. This homeowner was advised that Habitat for Humanity does the pick-up and only comes to Sedona once a week. We would have gladly hauled the doors to our dumpster if requested to do so. We cannot speak to how the old doors were removed from the premises since we finished our installation and were no longer on site. Complaints can be filed directly with Habitat for Humanity, and it's unfortunate he's holding us accountable for a timeframe of which he was advised and for the lackluster carrying ability of their employees. If he had contacted us to let us know the doors were dragged out, we would have been glad to follow up with Habitat for him. As he quoted in the scope of work, painting/staining were completely out of our contract. At the time we generated a proposal to do the work, it was agreed that the staining and lacquering work was to be done by others. The homeowner indicated an interest in doing it himself, but after the units were installed he wanted to hire someone to do it. Dwell Well gave him several names of local painters and it seems he experienced poor communication from one. The finishing of the doors was not to be administered by Dwell Well so it seems unfair to assign us blame for this. Regarding the deposit, the bulk of a Pella door/window project's cost is the Pella units, not the labor. We collect a 50% deposit on such jobs because we have to pay for the units upon ordering them. If a homeowner changes his/her mind in the month or so that it takes to receive products from Pella, we cannot be stuck with the units. Besides, most retailers require that you pay 100% up front when making a special order purchase like doors and windows, so we feel 50% is fair to both parties. Overall, we feel we tended to this customer well and did a great job installing the Pella units. Despite his grade on price, we discounted the units considerably below retail cost and our installation cost was less than that of Home Depot! He would have had a very hard time beating our price, and the quality of the install was extremely high. The doors were installed meticulously and the errant nails he mentioned must have been just the tips and barely noticeable, because neither we or the homeowner noticed them upon final walkthrough/inspection of the installation. Again, had he contacted us about this we would have gladly come by with a nail set. I would encourage this homeowner next time to speak more about how we milled him a custom composite threshold for his front door, free of charge, did a thorough and excellent job waterproofing the openings, creating sill pans, sealing the units and trimming them out, and came to the job site upbeat, positive and friendly every day we were there. I would also encourage the homeowner to contact the painter he called and Habitat for Humanity to express his frustrations. Greg Van Dam, owner"
First of all the Dwell Well group is a and quot;Team.and quot; There is respect and expertise throughout and each person we met seemed as excited about their part of the remodel as we were. They listened to us and to each other. When the demolition started, I about had a heart attack. Ceilings and walls came down and holes were cut in the wall. Each night, they cleaned and swept and tried to contain the mess in a caring respectful manner. This helped.
There were a few unforeseen problems like the floor in the living room was not level making the laminate flooring a challenge to lay down. We were out of State when this happened and it was solved by the Dwell Well team in a professional manner that did not just put a band-aid on the problem but made our floor as level as they could get it and the laminate secure and flexible. Doors were finished expertly and the color coordinates throughout the remodel area. Finishes down to the streamlined door stops are amazing. We added a Pella sliding door out the back. It has blinds in the glass and what a plus that has been. We've grown to love the luxury of having the blinds inside the glass and it feels like more of necessity now (smile). Our previous kitchen became an office with a beautiful pocket door. I can't believe that little bitty room was but it makes a great office.
The kitchen was so much fun to design because of Greg and the team. From the beginning Greg encouraged us to pick what we loved and not settle. For some this is easy but for me not so much and his interest in making sure we were certain was a great help. I believe he really takes time to know each person and understand how to help. Thinking back, I had trouble making selections on counter tile; I went with tile because I liked the look and was trying to cut costs a bit. Greg encouraged me to keep looking until I found something I loved. He was right and I did. Then, Rogelio, a part of the Dwell Well team, laid the tile with matching grout that is thin and durable. He added a metal edge around the counters that is beautiful. The under counter lighting and recessed lights are bright and shed light in all the right places.
Living here is like being in a new home and we are so grateful to have had such a positive experience.
All home repairs, replacements and maintenance are disruptive to some extent, but Greg scheduled the materials, crew, and subcontractors to minimize time and hassle to us, the homeowners. Every member of the Dwell Well crew was courteous and professional, as were the sub-contractors (who took care of dry-walling, stuccoing, caulking, and painting).
No one left a mess behind. Also, when we had a small warranty item, Greg came to check it out first. Greg Van Dam and his crews at Dwell Well are masters of their trade. Not only that, but Greg is wise enough to know what he excels in and he won’t take on jobs that he cannot do. Greg surrounds himself with good subcontractors, whom we’ve also come to trust for the good workmanship. We trust Greg’s recommendations for other contractors. We’ve used the caulker, window washer, and roofer and he recommended and we are currently getting bids from the stucco contractor he recommends.
DO check out the manufacturer's web sites;
DO consider overall home energy efficiency;
DO email back and forth to get the details right;
DO give a window of acceptable installation/ work dates;
DO use and quot;Dwell Welland quot; in Sedona;
Do NOT bother with the weird piece-meal contracts at HomeDepot.
It took them 5 days to complete the window replacement. They made the job as uninstrusive as possible.
I plan on hiring this same company to do a bath/shower remodel in the next month or so. A great company that I would not hesitate to recommend to others.
