After talking to Brad about his impressive background in horticulture and glowing recommendations from a neighbor, we decided to give him the equivalent of a clean slate to redesign our new (4/13) home's landscaping - front and back.
Below are some of the highlights:
Front. He was able to successfully transplant (huge cost savings) many of the cacti that were cluttering up the area to the rear of the house and turn the front into a true living desert. In addition he redesigned the entrance walkway with plantings that were more appropriate to the overall look we wanted to create.
Next we moved to the rear 1/4 acre that had a flagstone patio, free-form pool and two kidney shaped grass areas on both sides and natural desert plantings spread out around the rest of the property.
The challenge we presented was to make the two large grass areas go away and convert them to two desert perennial gardens that would give the pool a dramatic setting to be enjoyed by everyone.. In addition to a wide variety of new low maintenance plantings, he also added a 3' wide rip -rap border to separate the pool from the new perennial gardens.
The manual labor that went into this project was significant. Removal of all the grass, adding new desert appropriate gravel to replace the grass areas.
The 15 yr. old irrigation system was leaking in a tremendous # of places so we decided to replace the entire system (front and back) so that plants that had not had any irrigation in many years would now have a chance to come back to life. And they already are showing their thanks with lots of new flowers.
He also replaced the large gravel around the pool patio flagstone tiles with a much more appropriate filler that would not be constantly being kicked into the pool.
I could go on and on about all of the special touches that he recommended..i.e. a 40" cement wok that he installed in the rip-rap area between the pool and spa that he filled with beautiful annuals.
The final piece of this wonderful new living desert that he created will be updating the accent lighting to make the area just as beautiful and inviting in the evening as it is in the daytime.
We just moved to Scottsdale in April from NJ where my hobby was our large perennial and rose garden in front of our home. Brad was very happy to be my mentor and teach me how to recreate my hobby in a totally different planting environment.
YES, we would highly recommend Brad and Living Desert Landscaping to anyone who would like a truly professional and horticulturally correct updating or ongoing maintenance of their landscaping.

I phoned Living Desert Landscape and they were able to come the same week to look at my yard. I have a back courtyard type of set-up because it is a townhouse. The yard is bricked except for the area's lining the walls, which have dirt and drip system for eventual foliage. There were a lot of weeks, debris from the mesquite tree on the other side of my wall and general Arizona dusty dirt.
I don't have the equipment or time to take care of even this small yard. Living Desert Landscape did a beautiful job on the clean up and had some nice ideas of getting some plants back there. I felt very comfortable with them and will use them in the future for the changes I want to bring some life to the yard and clean-up maintenance.

Brad and his crew are always punctual and outstanding at getting our yard back in order. Brad always goes above and beyond with recommendations for our yard including fertilizing a new garden and seed recommendations. Brad has also be very instrumental in the layout, design, and plant recommendations for our yard. Including help us change our irrigation system to drip line. We really appreciate his thoroughness.
