My boyfriend and I just bought our first house and we have so much we want to do to it. We are fairly young ( 24 & 25 ) and had no idea where to begin so naturally we turned to our parents for advice, my mom specifically. My moms husband happen to have a family friend or someone that he has known for over 10 years that he recommended to us.
Eric Mills or "Eric the Handyman" Met us at our new house for a little consult, or as he said "A job interview". Im assuming my moms hubby told him that we a had a ton of little projects we needed help with so he seemed very interested. We walked him through our empty house and discussed some little visions we had from re finishing cabinets to installing new appliances, changing fixtures to hopefully changing our flooring one day. The first and most important project to my boyfriend was hanging up our new TV over the fireplace which we were concerned about not having studs in the wall. He said that he actually had time today to do so and went to gather his tools after agreeing on a price ($100). My mom and step dad left and my boyfriend and I watched him do the entire job for about an hour. We were impressed not only at his work with the tv but he was also hilarious and a really nice guy! We were pumped at how the tv and soundbar turned out and payed him and he was on his way. We thought we found our man! our handyman that is. We were stoked that we would have someone to help us turn our house into our dream house and loved that he was enjoyable to be around.
We ended up purchasing brand new beautiful Kitchenaid applianced at the Labor Day sale at Home depot. We ended up getting a new dishwasher, range, and hood. We mentioned to Eric that we wanted a hood and he goes okay cool where is it going to vent out of? Quickly slapping my 24 year old self back to reality lol. I have a vision but I don't always think things through. I thought you just hung the bad boy up! He said he would have to cut a hole and make a vent so once the hood was installed it would actually ventilate out of the house. I ended up having a last minute business trip to London and my boyfriend works 60 hours a week and we wanted to get this done asap. STUPIDLY we trusted Eric to Install this while we were not home. We wouldn't have done this with a random guy but given the history with him and my step dad and our interaction with him the first time we met him we trusted him. And we don't have much in the house so we locked up our important stuff in our safe but we were not to worried.
Eric came to install on September 12th. When my boyfriend got home he came home to a bit of a mess. Allot of dry wall dust everywhere and fingerprints all over the hood and appliances. Just over all a sloppy job. As he looked closer he noticed huge scratches on top of our brand new never been cooked on stove top! It looked as though he set the hood down right on top of it and scratched it all up. Also multiple little dents on the hood. AGAIN THESE ARE BRAND NEW AND NOT CHEEP! I woke up in London to photos and I about cried. Im not sure what exactly happened as he is not taking responsibility but anyone that is running a handy man business should be more careful when dealing with a clients property and should most definitely take ownership of this. Although he claimed the scratches were not caused by him he said that he would come over and " fix the scratches". Again we work like crazy so my mom went over to meet him. We were also extremely upset so it was best that my mom dealt with him. I received photos of the "fixed job" and was still not impressed as it is still scratched up and whatever he used to buff it made a different type of scratch and weird smudges that won't clean off. The hood has so many nicks and scratches as well like he just didn't care about what he was doing at all. We asked for him to replace this and he said absolutely not it is not his responsibility. Poor business if you ask me and horrible customer service. We are trying to figure out a solution currently but please people DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN. Accidents happen every day and I understand that but the way he has handled this is wrong and something needs to be done. TAKE OWNERSHIP. I also have text messages from him being argumentative pointing out the type of car that my boyfriend drives implying that money isn't an object. Well guess what Eric money does not grow on trees and regardless of the fact that we own a home and have one decent car does not give you the right to destroy our things? Who says that kind of stuff anyway? We work hard for what we have and worked hard to buy the appliances that are now damaged! Looks like we will have to find a new contractor to help us with our renovations.
I have before and after photos as well that I will attach if possible.
Eric the Non Licenced Handymans poor knowledge caused us thousands of $$$$ down the drain and into our neighbors garage that we had to repair...
You always hear stories about people that has been screwed when they do remodels. You never think it will happen to you.
That's what we thought after having done many remodels in many different countries.
It happened and with these words I want to warn people who is thinking about using ERIC the HANDYMAN for anything more complicated than changing a lightbulb or painting a not-so-often used mudroom.
Eric the Handyman can be convincing. He tells you he is qualified and he shows pictures of all big jobs he has done. Don't believe a word he tells you. All he is good at is being a big time liar. He cheats, he's a BIG time scam and nothing else. A looser with some tools in his hands.
We hired him for a few minor jobs and he proved himself by fixing them on time and in an ok matter.
He heard we were planning to remodel our master bath and he convinced us, by telling us about all the big jobs he has done and, that that was really what he did... besides being a handyman.
He gave us a quote for doing the entire Master Bathroom, a copy of the Guest Bathroom that we had just finished remodeling using professionals. It was a fair quote and not an underestimate. 60 upfront and 40 when it was done.
He promised us he would set away his entire time until the project was done and NOT take any other jobs.
Read that carefully... NOT take any other jobs until our Master Bathroom was done.
The job should have taken approximately 3 weeks. That's exactly what the Guest Bath took.
Then trouble began. Eric showed up at 9/10 am and stayed for about 4 hours. Some days he didn't show up at all. He always had an excuse. In the beginning we believed him but as time went by we got more and more frustrated with his text-messages telling us he was not showing up... because of this and because of that, frustrating to say the least.
We discovered that he did exactly what he had promised us NOT to do. I guess with a big deposit in hand it's tempting to take every minor handyman job he was asked to do. And leave the bigger commitment to become a less than half time job.
We thought he would never get done and every time he left, our place was in a complete mess because he was always in a hurry to rush to another temporary job that paid him that little extra money.
Then we started to realize that he, Eric the Handyman, had no clue as to what he was doing.
But, unfortunately it was to late.
At the very end, 7 weeks after he started, with an impressive 3,5 hours average daily show up, he said he was done.
We were truly happy to get rid of him... never to see him again and the daily mess he created and left us with.
We turned on our new shower and it turned into a waterfall in our neighbors condo down below us.
That's how badly built it was, not to mention the rest of "his" remodel.
Not only did we have tear down the new shower and start from scratch. We also had to pay for all repair jobs in our neighbors condo below.
It makes Eric the Handyman a disgrace for Angies List and all other honest and qualified workers out there.
Think about that before you hire ERIC the NON-LICENCED HANDYMAN
Eric came ready to work, took a look at both toilets and told me he didn't think they were cemented in, and he would try to pull out one toilet and checked. I am very appreciative of the work. He pulled out the other toilets as well, added fresh sealant and installed the toilets without damage to my walls or tiled floors. Eric saved me hundreds of dollars.
Oh, Eric did several other jobs as well. All done in four hours.
Thank you Eric!
n be back again
This man is a gem, We have subsequently employed Eric several times. Eric is a super trustworthy, competent person..
