I went to Walneck's to ask about sewing machines. After looking online and at Walmart, what I saw didn't impress me and I couldn't find any consistently good reviews. I want to do some basic sewing but will be using heavy material so I thought it best to go to the repair shop. These are the people who can tell you all "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" things about the machines. As I pretty much surmised already, the new machines in my price range, around $200, are plastic geared junk. The man I talked to was very nice and knowledgeable. If I have my Mother's 1957 singer shipped here I will have them check it out. If not I will buy a machine from them as they have better older machines in my price range and will know more about what I need than I, as I haven't done much sewing.
