Generally well. He obviously knows a lot about home construction. I was not happy that he did not check the AC unit. The weather was cool that day and he said it couldn't be checked. I disagree, but I'm not a professional AC tech. It was less than one year old, but the following summer when we needed it, we found it had a leak and the cooling gas was about half gone. It cost me more than the home inspection to get it repaired as the leak was in the main heat exchanger. Fortunately we had warranty coverage that carried over from the previous owner and it covered most of the cost which was actually around 2,000. 

I pointed out some black pipe, which is normally used to carry

natural gas, coming through the wall next to the hot water heater. I was concerned because it had a rubber hose attached and it was cut off and crimped with wire. His response was a shrug and no explanation.  I was surprised at that response but being concerned myself I later, after purchasing the house, dug out around the pipe on the other side of the wall out of concern. It was just an old drain line the previous own had for an old humidifier, which was removed, and he used black pipe for some reason.  The home inspector didn't know that, and his lack of response made me rethink the rest of the inspection. I think they may have over looked, or not followed up on some things figuring on the probability of there not being a problem,

rather than making the extra effort of verifying that there was no problem, or stating any concern.  I'm sorry for this unhappy review. The person is likeable but I prefer more detail, explanation, and their reasoning in response to questions. I've recommended using other inspectors since.

Randy West was a delight to work with. His report is extremely detailed and I will be able to use it throughout the years for maintenance information on my new home. He was very thorough and does not mind explaining things to someone who has no clue about structural, electrical, plumbing, etc. issues. He is personable and has a good sense of humor which is important while going through the stress of purchasing a home. I do not hesitate to recommend him 100%.

The first positive action was very prompt response to our email requesting service, like within hours. Then we were on a tight timeframe, 15 calendar days to complete the inspection from May 17th when the offer was accepted. It ended up that Randy did the inspection on Memorial Day, May 27th. Talk about customer service excellence! We could not be on site to observe the inspection, but the end result was a 48 page detailed report on the condition of the home across 9 critical areas. The inspection took 7 hours, plus his time to generate the report. The report not only details observed conditions of the home, but he includes Recommendations/Observations and a section called Maintenance Information which are invaluable facts and details about how to care for your home across the 9 areas. And to show you the quality of his work, on the day of the inspection, Randy would not locate the Main Electrical Panel that contained the main breaker to shut off power to the house. The day after he sent us the report, we got an email saying that he went back to the property to find the main breaker, found it, updated his report with the new information and provided additional pictures of the panel. That is again an example of service excellence. Randy also responded promptly to various emails we sent to him with follow-up questions about his report. He was always friendly and had a positive attitude. We also like the fact that for a nominal fee, he will come back assuming we move into the house and review with us any area we may have additional questions on. His report is also filled with funny quips and friendly comments as to what he saw and did during the inspection. The report is not a dry technical assessment, but an extremely valuable tool that we will certainly use in the future. With the many the challenges in buying a house, this was a very enjoyable part of the experience. We hope to meet Randy face to face in the future and thank him personally.

Local people in an online forum had recommended Randy West very highly. We scheduled the home inspection about 10 days after the initial contact. Randy spent a good deal of time inspecting and photographing the house. He was a knowledgeable and good communicator who took time to respond to my questions. He offered a detailed written report with illustrative photographs and prioritized the things that were in need of repair or alteration. Overall, I couldn't have been more pleased with the service he provided.

Randy was able to commit to a timeframe for the inspection during the first phone call. He kept to the schedule as planned and called me upon completion of the inspection to call my attention to a few noteworthy items. (I was unable to be present for the inspection.) His report, which was clearly written and organized, was sent via e-mail the following day. Shortly thereafter, while dealing with repairs to the home, I called Randy with questions and/or needing advice on about three occasions. He was always happy to take my call and his guidance was helpful to say the least.

Randy West was able to perform the inspection within a few days of when we first contacted him. He clearly indicated which services were within his scope and which were not. He showed up on time and took 2-3 hours to perform his inspection. He gave us an verbal overview of his conclusions when he was done. One of his major concerns was the condition of the roof. It wasn't obvious to a layman that the roof was worn out, but subsequent inspections by roofing contractors clearly indicated that the roof was indeed at the end of its life. Pointing this out was a big help to us. Within a few days of his inspection, he provided us with a 44-page report, complete with 67 color photos of various key components or areas of concern. Randy provides very detailed observations, which may cause some people concern. When you are dealing with a 20-year-old house like this, there will likely be many problems: some minor and some major. He points out everything and says whether it is minor or major. For those people that are expecting perfection in the house, his report may be unsettling. We used his report to determine what we felt was important. After 9 months in the house, I feel that his report was complete and accurate for its purpose. After the purchase, we had a question regarding winterizing the house. Randy went out of his way to be helpful and informative. We would use Randy again.
