Estimate Experience
I called, seeing the listing on Angie's List, to schedule an estimate. One of the owners came out to measure. He told me they do not do interior doors, it would be more cost effective to go buy them myself and pay his guys on the side to install. This was a majority of the work and I do not have the vehicle to accommodate nine interior doors. I asked if he could do this and I would just pay him. He said he would call me with the estimate once he looked into the interior doors. We played phone tag about five days later and he gave me the estimate over the phone stating he was not good with computers. The estimate was the lowest of the four I received so I went with them. He came out a second time to measure again and provide an in writing estimate. It took a while for the math to make sense, he was going faster than I was and coming up with a higher number than me. It was a confusing process. They do not take credit or debit cards, so our only option was to write a check and I felt there was pressure to write a check on the spot. He set the expectation it was a lot of work and would be a three to four day job, totally understandable. Meanwhile I had to go to Lowe's or Home Depot to buy doorknobs for the doors. Since there were so many exterior doors I was concerned about using the same house key. He said that's a common request and the crew would be able to rekey the doors, it's very easy and buy the same brand of locks as the key we have now. Then that was it, there was no other information or items for us to prep for the work. After the paperwork was signed, which I wish I would have read more thoroughly, and deposit was made a second gentlemen came out to measure again.
Scheduling the Work
A few days later the office called and let me know the materials had been ordered and they would reach out once items are received, or they have a date of receipt to schedule the work. The scheduler told me this was a two day job, which is different than what the owner said. We scheduled the work for about two weeks later to allow for all materials to come in. Meanwhile we bought doorknobs a few days in advance. I called a few days before the scheduled work date to confirm materials have been received and we're still on for the date discussed. The gal who answered the phone said yes and they were going to try to get all of the work done in one day and there would be three crews of two people at my home all day. This seemed like it would be chaos and overwhelming to me, but I trusted they had done this before and know best. I also have valuables in my home and became concerned about so many strangers in my house and in every room all at the same time, but I kept my mouth shut and went with it. I also had questions such as if I needed to empty all closets for the doors to be done, etc. The gal on the phone told me no, but to hang sheets over our things to prevent white dust. I wish someone would have proactively reached out to tell me that.
Day 1 of Work
Two of the crews, four guys, showed up in the morning and the third crew was coming a bit later. I showed the guys around, crated our dog, and asked if they needed any of our back gates unlocked and whatnot (again, wish someone would have set expectations of those kinds of things ahead of time). One crew began on exterior doors and the other interior. One of the guys, he was clearly in charge and had a high level of experience, told me immediately seeing the work there was no way it was going to be done in one day, it would be two or three days if everything runs smoothly. The crews seemed to have a lot of things going all at one time and many doors and windows wide open the entire day when they did not work those items. They tended to skip around a lot rather than work from one side of the house to the other. This was frustrating for me as I was trying to clean up a bit and keep an eye on everyone. The technician installing the closet doors asked me if I could empty the closet before he did the install. I let him know I called and they told me that was not necessary and why the change, he said he'd try to make it work and never mind, he did make it work but if he needed that I wish someone would have told me ahead of time when I asked the question. The third crew was supposed to arrive about 12pm and they showed about 2:30pm. All h*** broke loose. One of the guys in this third crew began playing Latin music loudly with all of the doors and windows popped out or open, making jokes, telling horror stories about other customers to the various crew members and when he did he was very animated in his retelling of the story and cursing loudly (the "f" bomb) and repeatedly in my front yard. I was mortified. None of the other guys asked him to stop or keep his voice down. Based on the content of the conversation and just needing the work to get done I felt uncomfortable and did not want to confront him about it. He slowed down the progress of that day by being late, his music, and need to stand around and distract others constantly. It was a mess and since everything was open all day, even doors and windows that did not need to be, there were a lot of bugs in my house. The crew cleaned up with a shop vac after themselves but I had a lot of cleaning to do that night.
This day we learned:
-The sliding glass door was delivered without the screen
-A door that swung the wrong way was ordered and the correct door needed to be reordered
-The technicians did not know how to rekey locks despite what I was told in the meeting with the owner
-Set ground rules to avoid becoming a nag or in an uncomfortable position, as I was, upon their arrival (e.g. no music, no cursing)
Day 2 of Work
One crew of two guys showed and they were in for a full day, again they were waiting on someone to drop off the screen and some windows they needed to install. They were professional, polite, efficient as they could be. They did what work they could while they waited, again, the technician dropping off materials showed up hours later than expected. When they were done I went around to check the work. Several windows I could not open, something needed to be trimmed to slide more easily (glad I checked). Sealant was needed in a few places and sealant leaked on to several items within my house that needed to be cleaned up. Two of my ceramic tiles were damaged by the crew installing the interior doors, the sander wore away the top of the tile and we'll need to have those replaced. The screen that arrived for the patio door was broken and would have to be re-ordered, not sure how this was not checked the day before. One window in my husband's office the way the furniture sits we cannot open the new window, I asked the technician about it and if they ordered the wrong window and he showed me what was written down and it was ordered that way by the owner who did the estimate. I'm not sure why since he saw the furniture in place when he measured and it's not what we discussed when he was here, there is nothing I can do about it now. I asked one of the guys if the lock on the sliding glass door could be rekeyed to our house key like all of the other locks. He was extremely dismissive and said, "Unless that specific request is in the work order we don't do it. Sorry." And literally turned his back and walked away, so I guess our conversation was over. When he came back I said, "I was not told a key lock would come with the sliding glass door, since it does I want it to match all of the other locks. I did not know to ask for it." His response was, "Call the office if you want or you can call a locksmith." And he turned his back and walked away from me again. Did he treat me this way because he did not care? Is it because I am younger than him? Is it because I am a woman? I really don't know, but I do know it was disrespectful to anyone - let alone a customer who is paying his salary. As I was going around the house checking the work the lead technician told me I had to prim
"Homeowner bought own hardware. She purchased Quick-set hardware her patio door has Schlage key holes which are different and cannot be re-keyed. Most hardware on patio doors do not match up with interior door hardware. That is the only door of all the doors she bought that has it’s own key. We do not remove shades or blinds. None of us in this business do that. It is told ahead of time to remove any window coverings ahead of time. We do not paint or stain which is clearly noted on the contract. Overall I am glad to hear customer states they are happy with the outcome. Customer completed our customer report summary and gave us an 8 out of 10 rating, and noted she would refer us to friends. This summary was signed by Mrs. Siegal."
"In response, all wood frame homes with stucco when replacing with new windows there is always some stucco damange, unless you do it with a retro-fit window which is dumping the frame with a new window with adhesive. That is the wrong way to do windows in the desert. In regards to the complaint about where the rail is to raise window up and down that is a manufacturer design. We have never had this kind of complaint. We have called Mrs. Owens to insure her we will be back to clean her windows."
This company raves about its reviews on Angies list, but the only reviews are for windows and doors. No reviews for cabinets. Now I know why. There are also no reviews for cabinets on this company's website. BBB does have anything about their cabinets either.
"We asked this customer if they knew what thier HOA allows for their windows. Such as vinyl, aluminum, color ect. They told me they did not know. I told them to check with their HOA on what is allowed. We have thousands of customers which are in an HOA situation, they all found out what HOA is allowing, so we are able to price appropriatley."
I did some research on window replacement and came up with a budget based on what I expected it would cost. I then called several other companies to come out and give me a quote. I was absolutely floored. Estimates were between $25,000 and $40,000 to replace all the windows. This project looked like it was a non-starter based on cost, and it was making sense why the windows were never replaced.
During this experience, I joined Angies List and did some research on some local companies. Based on the reviews, I called Wholesale Windows and set up an appointment. Bryan came out and worked up a written estimate to replace everything with dual pane, argon filled low-E glass vinyl frame windows. I was so happy with the price he quoted I immediately signed his company up to do the work.
There were two sets of measurements done, after which the windows were made to order. About three weeks later, I set up an appointment to have them installed. Three men came out and did about half the house on one day, and the remainder the next day. Durnig the entire time, the crew was absolutely punctual, friendly, and professional. The installation went very smoothly, and very minimal damage was done to the area around the openings. What little damage there was, they repaired immediately. All I had to do was some minor touch up painting. One screen was slightly bent, and frankly, I didn't even notice until one of the crew pointed it out. He made a note that a new screen would be ordered to replace it.
Now that the windows have been in for a couple of weeks, I can confirm all the good stuff they say about new windows. It is a little quieter (I live on a busy street, so it is noticeable, although it didn't help as much for the barking dogs), and the temperature difference is vastly improved in those front rooms that catch the afternoon sun. Not to mention they all operate smoothly, seal tight and latch closed, just like you would expect a window to do.
Overall, I am completely satisfied with the transaction. Just one note however - if you take on a project like this, get quotes from everybody else FIRST. Get the entire range of options explained to you by more than one sales person. Some of the sales people are clowns, and you have to deal with their pitch as best as you can, but after all the other quotes come in, call Wholesale Windows and get your last quote. Bryan is a no-nonsense guy. He is friendly and respectful, but he will not play bidding-war games. He knows his industry, and he can get you the best deal that he can.
All of the windows removed before installation began and one of the patio doors was removed after the window installation began.
The original meeting went well but a written estimate of the total cost was not available. The contract for the installation did include the cost but did not include the estimated installation date. The installation was later scheduled for approximately 3 weeks later but an opening for earlier installation occurred and was done. The four windows removal and installation were quick and well done.
New trim on the inside was required, unpainted wood trim was used. All of the nails did not go all of the way in. Some were set in to the proper depth but a few were left and I had to set them prior to painting.
The patio doors ordered were about two inches shorter than the patio doors that were removed. I was expecting that the replacements would be the same size as the existing patio doors.
The smaller patio door installation went well with the exception of the height of the door. Foam was used to fill in the 2 inch gap and was going to be covered with silicone putty only.
The second patio door was installed in an opening that was not plumb on one side, which was not noticed after measurements by 2 individuals prior to ordering the windows and doors. The base and the top of the opening were not parallel either. The wall was repaired and the door was installed with an uneven gap at the top of the door.
Because of the problems with the patio doors, the installation took until after 9:00PM, but it had to be done because I was not willing to have that large an opening overnight. Two installers returned the following day to put trim on around the two patio doors to cover the excessive opening at the top of the door.
A glass type or a coating on the glass to assist in reducing heat induction was not suggested but would have been helpful in providing the cooling/heating effect I was looking for in having the thermal glass windows installed.
Wholesale windows was on time and did exactly what they said they were going to do with a great product. The installers were professional and very friendly. Dog friendly too! They were careful to keep all the gates closed and paid attention to the dogs so they wouldn't get out or get in any broken glass. They had it all knocked out in one day and worked into the night until the job was done. The windows look terrific and cut out all traffic noise ( I live on a busy street ). They also worked on a Sunday which worked out great for me. I will definitely recommend them to anyone else and have.
