Textbook bait-and-switch Long story but here it goes: I hired Quail Plumbing to install a gas line for a new cooking top. The plumber came to take a look and quote the job. It was already suspicious that the plumber was in a van marked "Scottsdale Plumbing". He looked at the location where the line needed to be installed and give me a quote (8 hours of work). I scheduled for the work to be done one week later. This is where the problems started. The plumber came and immediately started complaining that he didn't have his van and his equipment, that he would have to go to the store to buy a level, etc. Next he started complaining that the drywall wasn't removed. During his visit a week earlier he didn't mention anything about this. Next he started complaining about the connections to the water heater (which hadn't changed from the week before, when he quoted the job) So all in all, before he even started he spent about 20 minutes complaining about the job. I ended up having to lend him my level so he could get started. Next he took out the water heater and started ripping out the drywall. He came and got me and started complaining again how this was going to be a lot of work. He got all upset of how the copper and gas lines were sitting in the wall, how he would have to drill through studs (like he didn't know this already before). Apparently the gas line went to the attic and he couldn't see where it went. To make a long story short he asked me how he had to do his job. He also told me I would have to remove all the drywall from floor to ceiling on one wall in the kitchen. Next he told me to think about it and he would reschedule if I agreed with the extra work: textbook bait and switch. This is where I got upset and told him I got other tradesman scheduled and I could not wait a week to get this done. Again he started complaining at which point I told him that I just wanted the work done the same day as he told me he could do a week earlier. I also told him that I didn't care if it took him longer as long as the work was done the same day. I thought this was it and he would get the stuff done the same day. This is were it got interesting... At this point he left and called the office. A minute later I got a call from someone whose name I can only assume is "Karen". She asked me if I had been verbally abusive. To which I said replied "No", then she asked me if was swearing. To which I answered "No". (This plumber would probably be the first man in history with tattoos over his neck and hands who is offended by swearing). Then she asked me if I wanted to reschedule for next week. At which point I told her I wanted the work done this day as I thought that was what was agreed 5 minutes earlier with the plumber. There was no reason at all for her to get involved. After some back an forth she had the gall to tell me to shut up while she was speaking and didn't want to listen to anything that I said. Every time I tried to say something she would interrupt me and didn't want to hear anything about the unprofessional behavior of the plumber. Apparently the customer is always wrong with Quail Plumbing. When she was done with her diatribe I told her that I would like to call my mommy too to help me out and defend my case, just like the plumber called his mommy (aka the office Karen). Needless to say "Karen" didn't like this and was offended. She decided there and then that they were not going to do the job and that I needed to look for another plumber to get the gas line done. Good riddance Quail (or is it Scottsdale Plumbing?).

I had a wall mounted hot water heater installed several years ago but it was never installed quite properly.  It had also developed a minor leak.  I've had two different plumbers check it out in the past and after doing minor maintenance, they each recommended something different for improving the installation.  Finally I contacted the manufacturer of the wall mounted heater for qualified plumbers for their products.  One of the companies they recommended was Quail Plumbing.  Since I have had quite positive results with Quail on past major toilet plumbing repairs, I contacted Quail.  They sent Mark who had helped me so successfully with my toilet plumbing problem.  Mark went over the wall mounted heater with me and discussed what needed to be done and why.  Mark needed to order parts that were left off the original installation but were necessary for the unit to function properly.
Once the parts arrived, a time was scheduled and Mark arrived promptly.  Mark finished the necessary installation and repairs on my wall mounted heater.  Mark discussed what needed to be done.  Mark suggested I purchase a flow kit descaler so I could easily clean out/descale my hot water heater on a yearly basis myself.  Then Mark went through each step with me (waiting while I wrote myself instructions) so I could easily clean the unit each year.
I discussed with Mark a future kitchen project I want to have done.  Mark explained to me what would needed to be done and quoted me an approximate price.
I will definitely use Mark and Quail Plumbing for all my future plumbing needs.  The price was what Mark had quoted me originally and I am happy with the final results.

Things started off well, called and scheduled an appointment based on reviews on Angie's List.  Quail was responsive and showed up on time.  I had chosen to use quail based on reviews on this site and a particular comment made by a previous user that the issues and cost were discussed with the buyer prior to any work being performed.  This is where my issue came about.
I had services provided on my rental house and scheduled the appointment when my renter told me we discovered a leak in the kitchen sink.  Communication with Quail was great until the technician arrived. I never received a call once he showed up to discuss what the issue was or what the remedy would be much less the cost.  Next communication I had was when I received a bill for $247.46 that showed I had a garbage disposal replaced.
My renter never complained of a non-working garbage disposal but merely of a leak at the connection ring.  It would have been nice to hear from Quail and my renter that the garbage disposal was not working prior to it being replaced as I would have been giving the option to replace on my own at a later date.
I would not use quail again as I do not know if the garbage disposal was replaced at of convenience or if was indeed not working.
Response from QUAIL PLUMBING INC
"We replaced the disposal because it was the source of the leak. Our plumbers are paid hourly and are non commissioned so that they are not motivated to up-sell our customers. We are sorry that there was a communication problem and offer a discount on a future service call from this client."

The line to my ice maker decided to start leaking under the sink. Of course, whoever installed it originally just tapped into the water line under the sink. The only way to shut off the water to the ice maker is to turn off the water to the whole house… Called Quail around noon. Maggie said they didn't have anyone available at the moment, but they could put me on stand by. That worked out great for me. Heath showed up about 3 p.m. He capped off the old line and installed a new one with a shut off so if this happens again, I can shut off the water to the ice maker without having to turn off the main water line to the house. Heath was very courteous and professional. When he was done, he also checked the line all the way to the refrigerator to make sure there were no other issues.

I walked into the garage this morning to find water on the floor and rapid flow of water from the water heater drip pan in the elevated nook where the water heater resides with the downstairs air handling unit. My experience with three different plumbers in our 14 years in this home although limited occurred at times when the situation required urgent action and in each case I was left with a fix in place but in the overall result I was disappointed.
Fortunately, in the prior several months we had hired "Pillar to Post" to perform a complete home inspection identifying areas that a 14 year old home might benefit from some maintenance and minor improvements. One of the benefits of such a relationship with a qualified home inspector is their set of vetted trades people. For example; last month using one of their recommended contractors we were able to make minor repairs to our roof for 1/3 the cost of competing larger companies.
For our water heater I turned to Quail Plumbing as they were a recommended plumber by "Pillar to Post" and they did not disappoint. Within three hours a plumber was on site and replaced our unit within a few hours. The conscientious and thoughtful manner that the phone representative and the installer conducted themselves was in stark contrast to the installer's behavior and unit cost from another company that had replaced a prior water heater unit seven years earlier.
In summary: Rapid response to my call, less overall cost for the same equivalent water heater unit installed seven years ago, faster response to an urgent need, a drip pan that actually fit (instead of punching a hole in my wall), and a drain line from the drip pan suggested and installed at no additional cost to the exterior should the unit leak at a future date. I could not be more pleased and I will be calling on Quail Plumbing to help our future plumbing needs.

Overall went excellent. Travis arrived on time - explained everything he was going to do. Had to remove old water shutoff valves as they were corroded. Interesting since a 2nd plumber had
installed them on the unit 2 years ago during the flushing of the unit - however this company did not
inform me of the problem with the metals. Travis did a wonderful job - very professional - and the unit is ready to go. I appreciate Quail Plumbing.

Travis came out and explained how the system works. He told me exactly what might
be causing the problem - and found the loose wire connection. The fix was not time
consuming. I questioned him about my unit - he explained how it works and how to
take care of it. I will definitely call him to service the unit and fix some of the issues that
weren't quite right from the installation.

I called on Tuesday and had service late Wednesday morning. Greg, the plumber, was able to come early and cleared this by phone. He was attentive to the issues raised, gave complete answers. and quickly made all the repairs we'd requested and even pointed out some things to watch for in the future. He was very professional, tidy, and made sure everything was in good working order before he left.

They were very accommodating with terms of honoring their commitment and quotes. They were very clean and as they worked, they took care of all the mess possible. They were as non invasive as they possibly could have been during the entire process. They were very professional, thorough and I really liked them.

I called Quail Plumbing on a fairly short notice to perform several plumbing tasks on my house under construction. I explained to them (in detail) I needed (1) a plumbing top out test to verify non of the drain plumbing & vent pipes leak; (2) connect 2 fireplace gas lines from the main house gas lines (next to the fireplace) to the gas valves beneath the fireplace; (3) repair or replace a house water shut of valve that appeared not to work, (4) add a second water shut of valve in order to shut off the water to a detached garage. Technician arrived on time, and was professional, but there he did not have equipment with his truck to perform items (1 & 2), which were the higher priority items I needed addressed. After some investigation on item 3, we ended up only installing the shutoff valve and the tech had to go to his yard & supply house to get items to install the gas lines. The quality of the workmanship was fine only it took longer than it should have to complete the work that they actually did. Since there hourly rate is rather high, the cost adds up quickly. They tried to charge me 1 hour of labor for the time they were on the road getting supplies when they should have either brought them on the truck or else called me to get additional details about the job if there were questions. After calling the office about the bill, they agreed not to bill me for the labor time when the tech wasn't even at my job site. They also charge at least 2-3 times the price for the parts as compared to Lowes or Home Depot. Overall, you end up paying alot for what you get.
Response from QUAIL PLUMBING INC
"The homeowner contacted us on 5/26/09 and scheduled work for 5/28/09. We were called out to finish plumbing that was started by another contractor. We were not asked to see the project ahead of time to get a material list or to give an estimate. When the homeowner contacted us, he did not relay what size of pipe or the type of pipe needed for the gas line. There are too many types and sizes of materials to stock on our vehicle, so it was not a matter of being unprepared. As a courtesy we did deduct one hour from the original invoice amount to accommodate material pick up. We have never hidden what we charge in parts, labor or equipment; we are honest and upfront. If the homeowner would have supplied his own materials we would have installed them. Quail Plumbing has always prided ourselves with offering competitive pricing. We have been family owned and operated for over 17 years and have an excellent rating with the BBB and Registrar of Contractors."

The technician was very friendly and knowledgeable. He worked quickly but accurately, allowed me to help with a few things (turn water on/off, etc.) to save time (and thus $$). Hourly price was a bit high, and they required that I pay for the time it took them to go to the store to get a part.

QUAIL'S PLUMBER WAS VERY POLITE. ONLY PROBLEM WAS HE GAVE ME AN EXPENSIVE MIS-DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM AND HOW TO FIX IT. WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY UPSET IF HE'D PUNCHED THROUGH WALL ONLY TO DETERMINE WATER PIPE BOLTS WERE NOT THE PROBLEM, BUT RATHER A SIMPLE $13 PART IN TOILET TANK COULD HAVE FIXED IT. AM LUCKY I DECLINED WORK AND EVENTUALLY SOUGHT A 2ND OPINION. COULD HAVE BEEN AN EXPENSIVE, MESSY ERROR IF THEY HAD GONE THROUGH WALL.
