Emilio's performance was very unsatisfactory, due to an error fabrication and his subsequent lack of willingness to correct the mistake and horrendous communication.  When Emilio and I reviewed the scope of work and he templated the job, the discussion was very specific about the backsplash height behind the range.  I provide him with the appliance manufacturer's specifications for the microwave dimensions so that the cutout for the microwave would be the correct size.  Of course he noted the measurement in his notes and we also wrote it on the wall to avoid any confusion.  Our agreed-upon backsplash height would accomodate the microwave, while allowing a .25" reveal (margin).
On the day of installation, I was treated to two big surprises.  First, the granite the had specified, St. Cecelia was not readily available at his supplier, so he took it upon himself to select a different, similar stone.  Fortunately I was OK with the replacement stone but that was a very risky move on his part to switch stones without even running it by me - very poor communication.  He also charged me an additional $150 because he said that the replacement stone cost him a bit more than the St. Cecelia would have.  The other issue on the day of the installation was the backsplash; the microwave cutout was exactly 1.0" off of our previously agreed-upon measurement, so of course the reveal (margin) was 1.25" instead of the agreed upon .25".  When I called Emilio to discuss the issue he stated "mistakes happen, but I will correct the problem by using a 1" strip of stone to fill in the gap.  I reminded him to hang on to remnants from the job, so that the stone "fill" would be from the same original slab.
Then began the nightmare of trying to get him to actually come back and do the repair.  First multiple agreements to show-up and subsequent missed appointments.  Then he stopped returning calls/responding to messages entirely.  Finally after several weeks I gave up.
So...in conclusion, he gets an "F" from me for poor workmanship, lack of follow-up and horrible communication.
