John & Jean Peddicord Carefree Az
For the installation, they arrived on time, worked efficiently, professionally and cleaned up after themselves. The techs were great to explain what they were doing. It is a good idea to have paint on hand that matches your exterior walls as they will need it to paint over where they patch the holes they drill in the exterior wall. Also, make sure you check through your house to make sure every outlet and every light switch has an appropriate cover plate. We were in the midst of some other renovations and a few switch plates were missing. this allowed some foam through the walls and a bit of a mess in one room. The techs cleaned it up fast and easy as they used their vacuum to clean it up and then wiped away the water soluble residue quickly. In no time, it was if the mess was never there. No stains, no mess, nothing. Impressive.
We could immediately tell a difference in how much noise we noticed from outside the house. Also, it became evident very quickly that there were many places where we had air leaks through the slump block walls on our 2600 sq ft home built in 1969 with 1 major addition of 400 sq ft.
with regards to elevated pricing, my husband and I still decided to investigate
Retrofoam as an option for the east wall of our house and the walls and ceiling
of one room (which is an add on with only 3 inches of roll-style insulation in
the walls and ceiling). Due to the ceiling only having about 4 inches space, blow
in attic insulation company could not get in there to blow insulation in. This room is 10-20 degrees hotter than the
rest of the house and foam was the only option.
Alex was our rep and his presentation at the house was informative. He
informed us that they are the only company that has the rights or licenses to
use this type of foam, which does not have formaldehyde. The quoted price was about $2200 for the east
walls of our house and the ceiling of the one room. They gave us info for a company that could do
a home improvement loan for us. Alex
left with our $600 deposit check and a tentative schedule date for about a
month later. We immediately called the
home loan company and to our extreme surprise, we did not qualify with
them. Our debt-to- income ratio is exceptionally
low and our credit scores are fairly high.
This company offers a 6 month, no interest loan, but after the 6 months,
the interest rate jumps through the roof.
Due to our low debt-to-income ratio, it was very feasible that we would
have the amount paid off in 6 months and then the loan company wouldn’t make
any money; therefore we feel we were declined for this reason. Not having $2200 cash, we immediately notified
Alex the same day that we had not been approved and needed to reexamine if we
could afford to move forward. Two days
later, our $600 check was cashed anyway. Although this made me a bit nervous and uneasy, Patrick explained that he makes it a practice to deposit the checks right away so that they are not laying around and he reassured me that if we decided to
not move ahead, they would refund out $600.
We looked around at two other companies which were about
half the price, however it appears to be true that Retrofoam is the only one
that does not use formaldehyde in their product.
After several weeks of reorganizing our financing, we decided
we could move forward with just the add-on room of the house, which was the hottest.
We called Alex to ask him to look at
the measurements of that room from his notes from his visit and give us a price
for just that room to include walls and ceiling. We never heard back. For weeks my husband called and emailed
numerous times and never heard back from him.
We ended up calling Patrick, who told us he would touch base with Alex
and we should hear back. Still, we heard
back nothing from either of them. We were
very dissatisfied with this company at this point, and had there been any other
company who could do this, we would have gone with another company. Finally, after about a month, we heard back
from Alex on a price for only the ceiling of that room (which incidentally
would cost $1,000 which is their minimum job). After repeated detailed
exchanges with both Alex and Patrick in attempt to clarify that we were looking
to do the wall and the ceiling of that room, they finally gave us the price -
$1400! With continued reassurance from
phone conversations with both Patrick and Alex, guaranteeing it would decrease
the heat transferred into that room from outside by approximately 85%, we
agreed to move forward and keep our original schedule date. We never received a confirmation call from
them the week of the scheduled date and we actually had to call them, twice, to
make sure we were still set for that date and time.
The day of the install, two gentlemen showed up on time to
do the work, however Alex had given them the wrong order and price of work to
be done, which was very frustrating after all the poor customer service we had
received thus far. After a phone call to
Alex, we got it straightened out and the workers began. I was satisfied with the two who were there to
do the install; they demonstrated patience, professionalism, and seemed to take
good care of our property.
However, we were left with no paperwork or information on
the foam or what to expect from the product.
The reason I bring that up is because starting that evening there was a
strange “burning” odor coming form that room that just kept getting worse, but
I had no idea if this was normal and to be expected because I was given no
information for after the install.
On the second day of having the foam installed, the room is
NO cooler than it was, and in fact, it actually seems to be hotter than it was
before. We called Alex to requests them
to come out with the thermal gun and troubleshoot. He was scheduled to come out the following week, however on the 6th
day after install, (the day Alex was scheduled to come out) the room finally actually started
to feel cooler than it had. I texted him and asked him if there was a ‘cure’ or ‘set’ time for the product because we were just now noticing a difference. He then informed me that there is indeed a
“cure time” of 48 hours, and that is why he suspects we didn’t feel a difference. As to why were not told this at this initial
presentation, during or after install, or when I called him upset the following
night after install reporting no difference in the temperature of the room, I have no idea. The room is not necessarily the same temperature of the house, but it is maybe 3-4 degrees warmer, verses
the previous 10-15 degrees warmer., which is what we were told it would do, and it appears to work as informed.
Update: company has responded that this was not an a name or address that they did service work for. However that is incorrect. This is a shared account with the co-owner of the property who has a second house in NC. This house in Mesa, AZ, to which service was provided by retro foam, is listed as the"vacation" home on the Angie's List account. Patrick infarct called us a few days later to confirm. Patrick met with us at our house a few days later to discuss the review and their customer service.
"(deleted member name) of Cary, NC has never contacted us and has never been a customer of ours. We only work in the State of Arizona and have never done work outside of Arizona."
We recommend this company to all that are interested. We could have used other companies but this is this company's expertise.
