Doug McKenzie was referred to us by a family member who was well acquainted with him and his capabilities. We called and set an appointment to discuss a couple of projects we wanted done at our house. Doug came over and we discussed what we were interested in doing. Arrangements were made to do the initial projects discussed at the meeting. They went so smoothly and exceeded our expectations that we then discussed the various aspects involved in making the house more energy-efficient (Insulation in attic, better windows, and insulating stucco wrap) on our house built in the early 1970's. Doug handled each project efficiently and with attention to detail. Still very pleased with what he had done - we moved on to a total kitchen remodel. The Kitchen was a dark, small, cramped room with a dropped / lowered ceiling and recessed lighting. The project called for raising the ceiling replacing the cabinets, better lighting (including under the cabinets), and essentially redoing the kitchen from the bare walls. He asked questions, provided samples, and took the steps to make sure we were comfortable with the choices available and always made sure what he was doing was in accordance with what we ultimately wanted. The Kitchen project was huge - and his understanding of what we wanted to achieve, providing samples & ideas, taking the time to locate what he thought we wanted, and directing us to the location to check it out (or bringing samples to us) insured we ultimately got the cabinets, granite counter-tops, and paint colors we wanted. Then there were the special touches like the crown molding, vent pipe cover, and spice rack which brought it all together. One thing progressed to another and after the kitchen was finished, we proceeded to each room of the house - removing the ?cottage cheese?ceiling, texturing the ceiling, painting the walls, and renovating the concrete floors. We decided to stain some of the concrete floors and purchased wood flooring to install in the rest of the rooms, hall, entry, kitchen and family room. The floors, while a lot of work, turned out great. Each room of the house now has its own feel and positive energy. We very much appreciate him taking the time to show us how the concrete floor stain would look in advance. The installation of the wood flooring we liked was very well done. His knowledge of available products, compatible trim, and the attention to detail made it all come together. It has been about 2 years since the projects we requested were completed. The house stays cool from the added insulation, dual pane windows and stucco wrap which were done first. Energy savings were noticeable on the power bill almost immediately. We appreciate the time and attention to detail on each of our projects, in order to understand what our ultimate goal(s) were while we updated our 1972 house. While there was sweat-equity involved, Doug provided guidance with helping us to do what- we could - and doing what we didn?t have the knowledge and/or expertise to do. Lastly, he worked with us allowing ,us to utilize sweat equity where possible and working around our living in the home while every project was planned and completed. This helped us keep the costs within our budget and gave us a completed project we will love and enjoy for years.
