Most importantly, he can be trusted when accessing your hard drive. Who knows what goes on when you drop off your computer at one of those computer fix-it places...are you getting a competent and trusted employee trying to fix your hard drive or is it the kid they hired yesterday who's just starting a work release program and rummages through your data just to see what's there?
Jim is very reasonably priced and never tries to sell you stuff you don't need.
Better yet, with very few exceptions they do their work right there in your home or office and your computer works fine when they leave. You don't have to take the computer to the store, leave it, do without it for days or longer, then come back to get it (and then have to hook it all up again). On rare occasions, they'll need to take a computer to their shop to work on it, but that doesn't happen often. They'll even talk you through issues on the phone when possible. You'll get a bill, of course, but it's more convenient to work it out that way the issue is resolved immediately.
The alternative to using guys like Jim and Ernie is to take your computer to a chain computer repair outfit or call some big outfit that sends guys in cute little cars to your door. Either way, you don't know who you're getting or whether they really know what they're doing. Or even if they're honest. And you never get the same person twice. I suppose you can call your computer manufacturer's tech support line...yeah, right. Let me know how that works out for you.
Most of us have a lot of personal and financial information on our computers and don't (or shouldn't) want someone you don't know poking around in it even if you're sitting there watching. Worse yet, you really don't want to just give your computer to an outfit and let them have it for days entirely unsupervised...who knows where on your hard drive they're rummaging and, at best, you're without your computer for days. With Jim and Ernie, you always know it will be one of them (usually Jim in my case) who shows up to help you.
