Carport Enclosures by Mike
About us
At Carport Enclosures by Mike you're assured timely work & outstanding results at a reasonable price. I'll prepare your carport for the installation of a garage door, or retrofit an existing opening for a new garage door. I satisfy the requirements & specifications of professional garage door installers & meet all Building Code requirements. I treat every job like it's an improvement to my house. Historically I've worked only by referral from professional garage door installers Valley wide. They trust their customers to me because they know that I do outstanding work & deliver the highest quality. Increasingly, however, homeowners are contacting me directly & I do my utmost to meet & exceed their expectations. Very important, I'll provide a detailed plan for how I'll approach the work -- drawings, descriptions, & a firm price quote. You can choose to work with me or, at the very least, you'll have the benefit of my professional advice & be in a better position to make an educated decision about the project & the contractors you consider. See my photos for a sample of the detailed construction & engineering plans that I'll prepare for your project. I look forward to working diligently, delivering value, satisfying your requirements, & earning your trust.

Mike started first by drilling holes in the concrete carport floor where walls were to be built. He then installed rebar in the holes using epoxy. He then installed forms and attached reinforcing rebar to the above anchors. The concrete was then poured for the stem walls. After the concrete setup, he glued and used concrete screws to connect treated lumber to the new concrete stem walls. Following this, the walls were constructed and screwed into place. Then he installed an exterior door on the side. Exterior siding was then screwed in place to match the existing siding. Trim was cut and put in place as necessary as well as the 2x6 framing for the overhead garage. Caulking was done as needed followed by paint.
He did the wiring for 2 front and 1 side garage lights, two new electrical outlets and a ceiling light. He also did the wiring for the garage door electrical/controls. I was very impressed with his electrical wiring skills and asked him where he learned them. He told me his dad was an electrician and he helped him many times in the past.
He was very particular, making sure that the walls, side door and 16' garage door framing were all vertical and leveled properly. He used screws for all of the construction which is much better than using nails. He was very good to listen to and discuss recommendations that I had. After he finished construction the garage door company came and installed the new 16' door without any problems. The entire installation looks great.
I would highly recommend Mike to others.
**UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO MIKE ON 3/4**
Mike,
You failed to simply communicate affectively with us. Regardless to any circumstance, as a business owner, you still have obligations to your customer. Instead you chose to disregard us as if we didn't exist. The only reason you are even putting your two cents in at this point is because of this review.
As far as your craftsmanship, no offense, a true carpenter would always have a carpenters belt on with all of his tools so that he wasn't constantly misplacing and forgetting where something was. You struggled to make precise cuts on rather simple angles and became very frustrated at certain points throughout the time you were here. I will attach a picture of the rather simple angle cut that in my opinion looks very amateur. (see photo 1)
As far as the "upgrade" to T1-11, that was a decision you made on your own (once you told me you chose a different siding to benefit the appearance of our enclosure- I immediately offered to pay the difference). Regardless, it does not match the existing siding. Yes, they are both 4 inch between grooves but not the same material. You also failed to match up the grooves which I brought to your attention at one point late in the day and because you appeared already frustrated, I decided to say "it looks fine the way it is" and we agreed to leave it be since it was extremely difficult to slide the T1-11 up under the existing composite siding that currently exists. I will attach a picture of this. (see photo 2)
There were several times it benefited that I was "supervising" the job, because I think you would of taken an easier route had I not. For example, one of the red heads wasn't properly installed and you were getting ready to leave it loose even though it anchors the bottom of the frame to the cement... had I not questioned, this would not have been properly anchored down.
Mike, when I hired you, you made it a point to tell me you would do most of the fabricating at home in your shop because you were so precise with your measurements which made for a very easy install upon arrival at my home- you failed to complete any prefabrication prior to arrival which is probably why the job took longer than expected.
Here is my most honest opinion on the quality of work Mike does- its very amateur compared to the way he conveys his work to be when speaking to him via the phone, text, or email. Mike has a way of speaking to you with complete confidence and I truly felt that he was going to do the outstanding job that he initially promised.
I hired Mike off of his words and how well spoken he was- I trusted him completely- aside from his personal issues that interfered and his lack of communication- after seeing the 80% work completed by Mike, I would not use his service again in the future based off his craftsmanship alone.
I have since completed about 15% of the remaining 20% on my own. Purchased material, which includes trim, caulk, junctions boxes, outlets for junction boxes, plate covers for boxes and another spotlight because I gave Mike the spot light I had so that he could make sure to get the appropriate junction box for that light... He did offer to bring that light back to me but I declined- the relationship was already over at that point.
In the future, we will be using a company with a reputable name so that if personal issues do arise for an individual, they will be able to send someone else out to complete the job on time as agreed to in the beginning.

"Unfortunately my family experienced a personal health issue and I was unable to temporarily continue the enclosure -- it put me out-of-pocket for 7-8 days. But life gets in the way and I'm just very sorry that my family issue had to affect my customer. In my view, the project was more than 90% complete and was of outstanding quality. The garage door (the most important component of any carport enclosure) operates beautifully due to the precision I use in my carpentry. The one side-entry door that I framed for and hung also works beautifully. The exterior siding I used (T1-11) was an upgrade over the less-expensive composite siding the customer had ordered. I made that change (and paid for it out of my pocket) because the selected T1-11 had grooves every 4 inches which reasonably matched the customer's existing siding and that's always my objective. I've since exchanged e-mails with the customer and, although I offered to complete the work now that my dad is home using a home-care professional, they continue to emphasize their disappointment and that they will complete the project themselves. The siding that the customer had paid for costs only $17 per sheet (4' x 8') at Home Depot; the siding I used costs $39 per sheet. This is almost 240% more than I budgeted and that the customer paid. I used this siding and paid for it myself, however, because I believed it was the right thing to do. The customer subsequently complained that even this siding -- with 4-inch spacing between grooves -- wasn't an exact match for his existing siding (at his roof's apex). This is true -- I know of no exact match for the customer's existing siding (for a house built in the 1960s) and the T1-11 siding I used is much, much better than the existing and is almost 3 times as thick and solid (for example, existing siding at less than 0.25 inch thick vs. the T1-11 I used at 19/32 inch thick. My customer subsequently suggested that his supervision was required and added value. Nothing could be further from the truth. My customer was present almost continuously, watching my every move, talking to me, and asking questions about everything I was doing. I wouldn't have taken this job had I known he would've been peering over my shoulder non-stop. Some home owners will ask, "Will it cost less if I help?" The answer is always a resounding, "No, it will cost more. As an example of my customer's keen desire to "participate" in the project and constant meddling, he tried to do some of the electrical work in the attic by himself and subsequently fell through his own ceiling. See photos below. Again, I'm extremely disappointed that I let my customer down. It was a serious personal emergency that required 100% of my attention, but that obviously wasn't sufficient in this case. I wish only the best for my customer and reiterate that my offer stands -- I'll complete the work now for no additional charge and to their 100% satisfaction."
"Thanks much, [member name removed], for your review in Angie's list. I logged in for another reason, but found your review and was very pleased. Thanks again."
"[non-member names removed] -- Thanks so much for your detailed and flattering review. Your comments are much appreciated! Please let me know if / when you're ready to enclose the side of your garage and I'll do a great job and offer you a great price. Mike"
