Based on outstanding Angie's List reviews, we took it first to 25th St. Automotive. They charged $200 for an inspection, found a funky pressure reading in #5 cylinder, and recommended an engine rebuild for $3,000 - $4,000.
We decided on a second opinion. My Mercedes mechanic (Bud Cloninger at M.B. Motors) recommended Bryden's Auto Services at 2730 E McDowell as both honest and outstanding.
Bryden's approach was to explore every possible cause for the Check Engine problem one by one, starting with the least expensive. He solved the cylinder pressure issue by replacing the spark plugs. My son drove the car for a day or two after each repair, to test it. The first couple of fixes didn't take, but Bryden nailed it on the third one.
Before my son acquired the Jeep, it had been garaged for almost a year. During that time, a family of rats had built a nest next to the engine, and chewed through the insulation on a couple of wires. The rats probably left when the Jeep was restarted -- but these wires now touched, causing the Check Engine light to stay on. Bryden replaced the wires : problem solved.
His charge for ALL these repairs was around $500 ... $3,500 LESS than 25th St. Auto wanted to stick to us.
Since that time, I've recommended Bryden to everybody who owns a car. He's been in the same location for dozens of years ... works on his own ... is as honest and decent as the day is long.
I cannot recommend him highly enough.
