I called Morehart because my husband was so busy and I was trying to save some work for him - the house is my own project and just recently purchased. The company was responsive and Leo was punctual. He went on the roof and when he came down he said that my evap was running fine, everything looked good except there was no water pump. My attic turbines were also not turning. He said I needed new turbines and water pump, for which he quoted me a replacement cost of $716.
He also showed me pictures he said were of my AC unit and said it was leaking refrigerant, needed either expensive repairs or replacement. No solid quote there, but estimated around $5000 to $7000.
He left the evap fan running (I actually couldn't feel any air, he said he could.) I declined further service and he left. I found the old water pump in the shed, I bought a new one for $27. My husband went on the roof a couple of days later and said the fan pulley and belt were not even attached so could not be running. He opened up the AC and said it did not look like any of the AC panels had been removed recently. He tested unit with gauges and tested fine. No sign of anything leaking anywhere. I do not believe the pictures shown to me by Leo were of my AC unit. Unit is running fine.
Last spring when they were out it was recommended to have some work done on my unit. Because of the cost and the age of the unit I decided not to have the work done.
This spring, after assessing my system, it was recommended that I replace it all. I was offered a significantly lower cost fix, but I felt due to the age of the system (8 yr. old condenser/20 + yr old air handler) I opted to replace it. Tom, my technician, provided a price, which he indicated was a good deal. I was adamant that the price he quoted me included all that was needed and that there would be no hidden costs. His quote was $5075.00. He assured me that was the case. I told him I was not ready to make a decision on the spot but would like to think about it and do a bit of research and that I would speak with him the next day.
Part of my research was to look on Angie's list to see if Morehart was listed. They were and had excellent ratings. I also noticed that they offered a 10% Senior discount. I spoke to Tom the next day and indicated I would like to conduct business with them if they honored their 10% discount. Tom was a little hesitant, indicating the price he gave me was already a great quote. He indicated he would need to contact his boss and would get back to me. I know this is a small business and understood the ramifications of a low bid, but, I did not know, at the time that Tom offered me the quote, they were a member of Angie's List and felt they should honor their Angie's list discount. Tom called back within a matter of minutes and said that they would honor their discount and quoted me a new amount of $4567.50.
Their install team, Tony and Mason, were out within a week to install my system. Tom had indicated that Tony and Mason would need to do some custom work to connect the air handler with my duct work. I paid attention when that was being done and was very satisfied with his custom work. I told Tony and Mason that I was not very familiar with air conditioning and would appreciate it if they answered questions that I might have as their work progressed. Throughout the install I had several questions and they answered them and helped me understand what I had.
The next day, after the install, I turned my heat on. I noticed that the condenser kept turning on and off - 60 seconds on 30 seconds off. I thought that was strange, since I did not have the air on, just heat. My initial thought was that the new thermostat that was installed was wired wrong. I called Morehart and was told that someone would be out at 2:00 to fix the problem. At 1:00 p.m. I got a call from Tom. He said he would be at my home in 1-1 1/2 hrs. He arrived at 2:15.
Tom went right to the thermostat and said that it had been wired incorrectly. He fixed it. He then assessed the whole system, to make sure everything was installed and working properly. At the time of our first meeting he said he would be doing that, so he followed up with that. I had also explained that i was having problems getting certain rooms heated and cooled with the old system. He checked all the vents and adjusted them to what he felt would be ideal for forcing heat and/or air in to those rooms that I was having problems with.
Overall, this was a pretty painless experience. Tom followed through on everything that he said he would, there were no hidden costs, all were punctual, when there was a problem, I felt that it was dealt with appropriately and promptly. I would call these guys again in a heartbeat.
