Our family members were very impressed, and felt his professional attitude and work was above and beyond what was expected.
It was about 117 degrees and our air conditioner went out. We had just moved here in July. They are under our home warranty, but they did not get over here for four days. Then our neighbors across the way used them, but they did not use them through Angie's List, I don't think. They purchased a brand new air conditioner and they had nothing but trouble with it. Cool Blew kept saying it was the people that sent it to us. They will never work with them again. We paid our homeowner's fee of $69. It is almost like they put a bandaid on things. They just fixed it so it would keep going. They did fix something, I don't know what. They could have gotten here sooner.
In November, I discovered a new problem: our heat wasn't working. I called Cool Blew because of the past service we received. It started well... they could come out in the next 2 hours. On time, the tech went up and looked at the unit. Said he thought it was one of 3 things related to the blower. The capacitor was the least major and expensive of the three possible problems. He went to his truck, grabed the part, installed it, and sure enough the system came back. What I did not like about the service was that the tech never quoted a price for the capacitor prior to installing it. He came off as a "part swapper" type of tech. When it came time to resolve the bill, I got charged for the diagnostic call, and $180 for a $10 capacitor and 20 minutes of labor. I understand that book prices are a way for many industries to make money, but this guy should have told me the estimated cost before starting the work. Not sure whether I would have continued, but it's my option.
When I questioned the price given the $10 part, he had a defensive attitude and told me a few things: he could remove the part, that HVAC work was like getting your brakes fixed (implying what exactly?), and that I should get a home warranty if I don't like their prices. Little did this guy know that I was a ASE certified mechanic as a 20 year old and didn't get his twisted analogy. In any case, at the end he tried to adjust my smart thermostat and had no clue, but left me dirty finger marks on the wall to remember him. Disappointing experience, but my heat works.
I called Cool Blew based upon their Angie's List rating and because the claim to be experts in solar hot water heaters.
When I called I was very specific about the issue I was having on my SOLAR hot water system.
Cool Blew sent a technician out to my house who not only was not licensed to service the SOLAR hot water system, but was unable to do anything. He was very polite and friendly, but so are my neighbors, who had the same expertise as the first young man that wasted both of our time.
The next day the manager came out, he was the "guy" that knew everything about solar hot water heaters. He told me that the only thing this could be is a problem with a "blower motor ?and it had to be replaced and although the part was still under manufacturer warranty the replacement would cost about $250, plus shipping. Here I had another choice, I could ship it next day air (and due to the time it was on Friday) it likely would not be shipped until Monday and arrive at Cool Blew Tuesday, the cost I would pay for shipping would be close to another $150-$200. ~OR~ I can have it shipped to Cool Blew (I assume by truck) and that would only cost an additional $70-$90, with arrival date unknown. I asked that this part be shipped overland.
As I did not hear from Cool Blew for over a week, I called them. I learned that the new blower motor arrived "late the night before I called" and they would send the manager to my house the next business day. John came back, he showed me the new motor and after some time he said it was all fixed, asked for a check for $319. As I did not have a check, I presented a credit card. I asked when should I be getting hot water, he said pretty soon and left.
After about one hour, still not getting hot water, I called John. He told me that everything was working when he left, and told me that he blower motor was believed to be the issue by somebody he was talking with.
-John asked that I get on my ladder and turn a hot water mixer or some other term to get all hot water to come into my home.
-I did as John asked, and took a picture of the valve that I was turning, just to be sure I did what he asked. (I should have asked him, but failed to is if he tried that first).
- I asked John if there is anything else we can do.
John suggested that I cut away all of the solar system and make the water heater a simple gas hot water heater. He told me it would cost another $250 to do that.
-I was concerned about my $3,000+ investment be turned into a $600 gas heater so I asked John if he could think of anything else I could do, or if need be, somebody else I might call.
- John promised that he would that he would think about this and call me as soon as he stopped driving (presumably) to his next appointment.
- John never called back. I called his cell number and he did not pick up.
I do not doubt that Cool Blew is very good at somethings that they do, based solely upon the Angie's List approval rate. That said, Cool Blew clearly has no idea how to fix solar hot water systems, but clearly know how to take money and not do what they promised to do. Perhaps Cool Blew simply should remove the term "Solar" from their trucks and invoices so that customers do not feel as if they have been duped.
