After getting estimates from various roofing contractors we decided to go with Avalon restoration since they provided a very detailed contract and explained their plans with the roof in quite a bit of detail. These plans also called for a subcontractor to help with replacing the patio plywood and pitch. Unfortunately our experience once work commenced was extremely frustrating and disappointing. The subcontractor in charge of the patio and adjusting the roof angles so that the rain would properly drain away that we met at the time of the estimate was replaced by another subcontractor when work commenced. The subcontractor brought in 2x6 rafters for the patio even though the contract called for 2x12 rafters. When we noticed this and brought it up with Avalon restoration this lead to a an unpleasant argument with my husband. Avalon was completely uninterested in hearing our concerns and said the 2x6s were good enough, which not being roofing experts we would have accepted, but since we paid for the more expensive 2x12s we should get what we paid for or get a refund. The remainder of the tasks were done about as bad as it can possibly be done. For example, the solar lenses that were to be installed were either not attached or barely attached, he simply placed a small splotch of tar on one of them and just placed the other one on the solar tube without securing it at all. This is something that could have taken less than 15 minutes to do properly. The wind turbines were not level so they did not rotate with the wind. The shingles that were replaced were not nailed down properly so that when you stepped on them there was a good chance that they would puncture the newly installed shingle. One of the rafters was not nailed down to the lookout and you could lift the roof slightly with your bare hands on that corner. The rafters themselves were cut sloppily. The plywood for the patio was not nailed down sufficiently and squeaks and wobbles throughout the entire patio. We asked Avalon to come by so that we could point out the poor workmanship. When we pointed this out Avalon responded by yelling at my husband and of course this caused him to respond and get upset. During this exchange Avalon started using extremely filthy and unprofessional language and at this point my husband asked him to leave our property. We then filed a formal complaint with the registrar of contractors, retained a lawyer, brought in three contractors to get their opinion of the work, took pictures, and video of the work. Only once we filed the complaint did he bother to put any effort to ameliorate our concerns. Our experience was disappointing and troubling given the current economic climate. He seemed to gain so little (in terms of labor and materials) by doing a poor job and so much to lose. We have only mentioned in this review only some of the work that was done poorly due to space limitations, but the entire job was sloppy and unprofessional.
