What makes the difference is when you're dealing with someone who gives you repair options. In my case, the work could be done for $3500 or $350 (excluding deductible for accident caused bumper replacement). I drive a 2007 Azera that's had more than it's share of bad neighbors in parking lots. While the front bumper needed to be replaced, I asked for an estimate on getting the sides and rear bumper fixed or at least attended to from previous events. Three certified insurance autobody shops gave me estimates that came in at $2400-3500 based on replacing panels, repainting, filling, feathering, etc. Jeff Honcharevich ran through the same numbers and then gave me an option B and option C. Those were the less expensive and less perfect choices. As I don't plan on trading in my car soon or putting it up for sale at the Barrett-Jackson Auction, I went with option C. It's nice to know there's still some common sense out there.
