We moved into a home built in 2008 and needed some updating. Mainly fresh paint to lighten up and replacement of a dark, traditional backsplash in the kitchen to something more modern.
We were referred to Ryan who showed up at our house the next day and provided quotes for the installation of the backsplash and paint.
Everything went as planned.
Installers were on time, did not rush through job. Every little detail was addressed to the point of perfection. Everything was cleaned up prior to them leaving. We are quite pleased and happy with the results. Exactly what we were looking for.
Would use this company for future projects.
Bottom Line:
Marble tiles were not installed flat. Over 75 marble tiles are cracked, chipped or scratched. Glass tile (after two workers and 3 tries) were not installed properly. Grout residue was left on marble tile and my kitchen cabinets.
Work was never finished. Glass tile needs to be removed and reinstalled. 75 marble tiles need to be replaced. Sealer was never applied. Electrical outlets were left hanging out of the walls.
DETAILS
I purchased the marble tile at A World on Tile, Mesa, on Power Road in Gilbert. The Salesman at A World of Tile Mesa recommended Patterson Remodeling to do the installation. Ryan Patterson came to my house gave me a cost estimate, said the job would take two days. He also looked at the marble and glass tile samples.
On the first day of installation the workers were scheduled to arrive between 8-9 am. At 10 am I called Ryan. His excuse was that he had dropped his phone and lost his schedule. Two workers arrived an hour later, but Ryan did not arrive with the tile until 12:30pm.
The lead worker told me he did work for Ryan occasionally, but was not an employee of Patterson Remodeling. It was obvious they were day laborers Ryan hired at the last minute. The lead worker was very pleasant, but totally addicted to his smartphone. I observed him setting tile on the wall with one hand while talking and doing searches with his other hand. The lead worker said Ryan had not charged enough for the job and they were not happy with what they were going to be paid.
They worked the rest of day one (a Thursday) and the next day. They could not get the glass tile to adhere to the wall. They removed the tile and tried an alternative method that left dried thinnest on the front of the glass tiles. The following week two workers arrived at 4PM. They could not finish the job because Ryan had not gotten the additional grout needed.
On Day 17 Ryan and another installer arrived to redo the glass tile work and finish the grout. By the next morning the glass tile had slipped again. Day 20 - Ryan called to schedule the remaining work. I told him the problems with the glass tiles, he agreed to redo it. Day 29 - After carefully inspecting the marble tile work I found over 75 cracked, chipped and scratched tiles. I e-mailed Ryan detailing the problems. Day 33 - Ryan responded, requesting an inspection date. I responded that day with several times for the inspection. Day 40 - I am writing this today, no response from Ryan.
Jake arranged for two guys to replace the drywall, mud and repaint the walls. They arrived on time and did a GREAT job. We matched the paint and were able to reuse the existing floor boards. When the boards separated from the wall in a couple of places a day later, Jake sent the guys back to use bigger screws and everything is FINE.
I would use Patterson again in a heart beat. Nice job, Jake!
When it came time to put in the new tile, I confirmed SEVERAL times what time the installers would show up. As usual, they were late - this time by an hour and a half. After the first day, everything looked good. At the end of the 2nd day, they told me that they couldn't do more until they had more tile. There was no supervision. They got more tile for the third day and completed it. When I got home I immediately noticed a problem where they had installed a and quot;sliverand quot; of tile up against a wall. Because of the pinwheel pattern, there will be some small pieces, but in this case they could have avoided it by using a bigger piece so that it was not noticeable. But the real problem was when I noticed the hall bathroom. The pieces near the wall went from 2 1/2and quot; wide to 2and quot; wide in a 2 foot length - very noticeable. Then I looked at other rooms and found other problems. In the office the cut piece went from 5and quot; at one side of the room to almost 6and quot; at the other side of the room. There was another area that also was very noticeable with a similar problem.
I called Jason (Ryan's fix problems guy) immediately (Saturday). I was very upset thinking that all the tile would have to be redone. Jason came right out and saw the problems. As it happened the tile foreman was also on his way over to retrieve his equipment. The problem was caused because they only snapped one chalk line to determine square. They should have snapped lines in each of the rooms to ensure that they stayed square.
We agreed that they would remove most of the tile from the bathroom and redo it adjusting so that the small pieces would be the same size. They also fixed the other obvious place in the entrance and replace a tile that was not level. I had to personally instruct them on how to do the front entry step - they didn't seem to understand how to do it properly.
The main problem with the company is that Ryan does not supervise. He shows up to talk to the installers and leaves. Then you can never get ahold of him again. Very poor customer service on his part. It took me WEEKS to just get him to drop another box of tile so that I would have some extra pieces.
"Thank you very much and we look forward to your call regarding the next project!"
The owner, Ryan provided a detailed list of things he would do with pricing included. He also said that he would match/beat other estimates we received.
We were able to get the work started the following week.
Demo was done very quickly and the house was left in good condition.
The floor tile workers were always prompt, courteous and very hard working. They did an amazing job on the flooring throughout the house.
The next phase was replacement of baseboards throughout the house and some minor drywall repairs. This worker came on a weekend to do the work and did a good overall job but we had to have the job foreman, Jason, come out on Monday to address some areas that were not competely satisfactory. Jason did the repair work himself and we moved on to the final phase of the remodel.
The entire interior of the house had to be painted, including doors and new baseboards. The lead painter met with us a few days prior to starting the job and was very polite and detailed in what he would be doing. Ex) applying a primer on the very dark painted rooms prior to painting them.
There was a fairly large crew that showed up, but after the first day we were disappointed to see the small amount of work that had been done. And the work that had been done, was not quality.
We were a little concerned that it took a couple of days and quite a few calls to get with Jason over this issue, however once he did come by and check on the painters work, he was very discouraged by the work done. He was very proactive in getting them back out to the house to fix all the issues and we were not asked for any payment until the final day when all work was done and we were satisfied.
