CLIFF'S WELDING SHOP

I took my van to them and asked to have the muffler changed to the longest one that would fit the space available. Also I wanted heat shielding added to keep the exhaust system heat from ruining my van waste water plumbing. Was told I would be charged $80 per hour shop time, plus materials, and it would take from two to three hours. They typed up an estimate for three hours plus the muffler and some shielding. This was over three hundred dollars. They didn't seem to be a muffler shop and when I was deciding whether to go for the bid, they said they were indeed a muffler shop. I was thinking that a muffler shop would be more efficient at muffler work than a non-muffler shop. I decided to have them go ahead with the work. I had asked to be able to inspect the system before welding. When I did this, noticed the muffler could be much longer than the one they had tacked into place. Was then told they went out for a muffler and the place didn't have a longer one. They weren't a muffler shop after all and had no mufflers in stock. After starting the van with the short muffler it was quiet as is, so had them weld up the system. It took about an hour total for this work. I was charged for two hours of work. I was there the whole time so could easily see how long they had worked on the van. Never did get my old muffler back.
