Shane recommended installation of a "Compressor Start Kit" for $362 and "Indoor Cell Chemical Cleaning". for $318. However, if enrolling in a 1 yr Silver Membership Club for $159, the above costs would be reduced to $135 & $128. There was no pressure for me accept this offer. It was provided verbally and in writing on my invoice.
I had no way to question the validity of the above service performed, but denied recommended offer. At some point in the future, with another company, I will recheck the service costs which I thought out of line. Anyway, I would never join any club that would invite me to be a member. {:>))
"first I want to say thank you. we do take every complaint seriously. as I look at your work order my technicians should of taken pictures of your coil so they can show you it is dirty. that is so you can determine if you want a coil cleaning or not. it also said that your coils if clogged up enough could show low refrigerant or just a dirty coil so he gave you a price just in case it was low on refrigerant. the barring of your fan motor did show signs of wear but was working he also gave you a price on that in case you wanted to change that out . when we do an a/c inspection we look for five things 1,what is broken today,2 what might break in the future, 3 what could make it last longer, 4 what could make it work better and 5 what could make it safer. the last thing you want is to have an inspection and be told there is nothing wrong to the system and then it breaks down during the hottest time of year. but we also don't want people lying to you either about repairs that are not needed and I certainly as an owner do not want my technicians to lie to home owners. I take pride in being honest business owner and I will not tolerate dishonest technicians. as the owner I will personally go over your concerns with everybody in my company an address your concerns' will also go back over about taken pictures which looks like that wasn't done in your case. I personally want to say I am sorry that you were not happy with our company and thank you for letting me know . so I can fix the problem. thank you"
"Thanks (Member name removed). We appreciate the nice feedback! We look forward to serving you in the future."
"Thanks so much John. We appreciate your feedback and thank you for those kind words. Stay warm and have a great 2015. Rafael."
2) Tech arrived on scheduled time and did his version of Angies list 21 point AC Tune up. (This cost me $79 from Angies list)
He discovered the unit was not providing air through the return ducts at a sufficiently low temp to cool the house.
(What I already knew thats why I bought the $79 dollar tune up)
He decided the small air leak on the roof btwn the roof duct and the AC unit was the reason for the above condition.
He fixed the leak with a patch (and the patch stopped the air leak but had NO improvement affect on the cool air return temp).
Cost for the patch was an additional $130 above the $79 original payment.
I asked the tech if the it was possible the AC system needed more refrigerant and he said that was not what it needed.
The tech left the property after telling me he would have his supervisor call me and decide what to do next.
3) The supervisor telephoned me later that day and agreed to stop by and look at the unit (for no charge) . He arrived with another tech and did an inspection of the unit. He determined that the unit was low on refrigerant and needed an estimated 4-5 lbs of refrigerant added. I asked him how much they charged to add refrigerant and he showed me a prepared cost sheet to add the R410A refrigerant to my unit. He said they charge the same for the service even if you only need 1 lb or a complete recharge and the standard cost was $696 dollars. At this point I was in shock as I knew it couldn't cost anywhere near this much for this product and there was a "Huge" mark-up involved. (I found out later that anyone can buy R410A in bulk 25 lb containers and the cost from Ebay is $115 delivered to your house.) He agreed to give me a small discount from the standard cost but I didn't believe it was a fair price so I didn't accept it. He told me before he left that the unit could be damaged running low on refrigerant and that I was taking a risk by not getting it filled at that time. He and the assistant then left.
4) I called the owner of the shop "Bill" and explained that the only reason I didn't have the unit recharged is because I felt the pricing was way out of line. He said he would drop the price to $485 and send the service crew out again that day if I agreed to this proposal. I weighed the high cost vs the risk of the AC unit being damaged and I agreed to this offer. The crew returned and added R410A refrigerant to the unit until the guages indicated the charge was complete. The unit immediately returned to its original efficiency and began supplying much cooler air through the return ducts and into the house.
On the itemized statement the supervisor said the unit's inside Evaporator coils needed cleaning and the cost for that service was $377. I declined to have them do this service.
5) A few days later, I went onto the roof and opened the unit to expose the Evaporator coils. I decided to clean them myself and found Home Depot sells a AC Evaporator coil cleaner just for this purpose (2 cans cost about $12). I performed the service and closed up the unit in about 2 hours. Can't imagine how they can justify $377 for this service.
The techs were very friendly and the supervisor seemed to be very competent at this job.
My biggest complaint with this company is the high mark ups for labor and material for any work required.
"I want to say thank you for your comments- They do help us with our business. As for waiting 10 days for service: I understand that it may have seemed like awhile, but we prioritize our calls in terms of urgency. Meaning, clients that have no cooling with elderly or infants in the home come first, then our member calls, then calls requesting A/C inspections or maintenance are taken in the order they are received. If we would have known you had an A/C problem we would not have scheduled your service as an inspection call. I understand pricing is a sensitive issue, but as a business we do have overhead such as workman's comp, social security, license fees, insurance, medical insurance and countless other costs just to hang our sign up for business. I do want to say thank you again for your comments. We will continue to review our pricing standards in order to make sure that they remain fair. Sincerely- Bill, Owner Aire Serv of the East Valley"
Chandler Air, Inc. scheduled us immediately, and were on time for appointment.
Their service man was courteous, and explained in detail what the problem was.
He had to leave to get the motor, but returned when he said he would, and
completed the work.
