We had used Carpet Today at 2 times prior to this and always felt that the owner was reliable and professional. Carpet Today as a store is closed but the owner is still doing jobs. We purchased laminate flooring through the owner along with a date to put in the flooring. He and his helper were to be at the job at 10:00 am but didn't arrive until 11:30 am. This meant that half the day was over to begin with. I know that the owner has had some very difficult times lately but I was so unprepared for his unprofessional attitude when he arrived the first day. He parked his work trailer in our drive and started to park his truck in front of our neighbor's yard. Our neighbor has guests that park there so I asked the owner to back up in front of our house. We had plenty of room. He got mad, gunned his motor, sped down the road for a full block, turned around a raced back to the front of our house. His reason for not wanting to park in front of our house? He didn't want the trailer to hit his truck if it began to roll from the drive! He didn't bring anything to chock his own wheels. If the flooring hadn't been there and our house a mess waiting for the job, I'd have fired him then and there. His bad attidude continued and worsened because our old 1964 built house is a measurment nightmare. He had done work before at our home but forgot how off center the walls are. There were some things to move but we had already removed several other items as well as taking the drawers out of the lamp tables. We had done a lot of work ahead of the job to make it easier for the job to be done. My wife and I are both disabled and all the lifting, moving etc. was a hardship on us. the things left for the workers to move were too bulky and heavy for us.
When he started to leave we noticed that the floor sunk down by the trim. We pointed this out and he said that the floor was supposed to give. Give is one thing; sinking down an inch is way too much. The next day, when we tried to pull the tape up from some of the joint areas, we couldn't get the tape up because so much glue had seeped out and was all over our new flooring. Then where he took up the baseboards, he put gouges in the wood so much so that all of our baseboards need to be relaced. Some of them were already in need of painting and we recognize that fact.
We learned our lesson. His work was once professional but this recent job was anything but professional. The flooring itself looks nice but the trim from one room to the next had far too much "give" and gaps. Our baseboards can't just be repainted but have to be replaced. This with his unprofessional attitude prompts me to say, not to use this company. The store is closed but the owner still does business using the Carpet Today name. I'm sorry to say this because he had always been reliable in the past. He acted as if he were doing us a favor, but $4400 is not a favor. It was most of our tax refund and only covered the living room and hallway. I'm sorry that he felt that we were being unreasonable in questioning the work. As I said, we really liked his work prior to this job.
