"Hello. This is Ron Bennett, owner of Bennett Construction. It is with great sadness, and some chagrin, that I write this response. Working for Maria and [Consumer Name Removed] has been bittersweet. They have been wonderful clients, and never missed a beat, up to and including being very understanding of the necessity for change orders and small additional costs a couple of times. The fault here lies squarely with me. The simple answer is that I drastically underbid this project. I did all I could to bring the project in at that estimated price, but was unable to do so. It has been a very painful and costly lesson to learn, and I truly wish I had not learned it at these excellent young folks' expense. I would disagree some, as we had very good communication for the majority of the build, I have not abandoned the project, it is very well built and approximately 80% complete. Various issues compounded near the end of this project that I could not overcome. I have offered to remain the contractor on this project, suggesting the remaining subs be supervised by me in order that the job be completed, but paid directly by the homeowners, so that they (Maria and [Consumer Name Removed]) would not have to entrust me with any additional funds. Any thought of profit has been long since abandoned. I do not blame the homeowners in the slightest for the direction they have decided to adopt. At this point, my only wish is that their project get completed without any further headache, and I am available to discuss this with them, should they decide to do so."
"Bennett Construction was hired for a garage build. The customer signed the contract and then waited months to send the down payment. The original bid was made with the understanding that the plans and permit were already done. The original plans provided were unbuildable due to setback and electrical restrictions. Bennett Construction ended up having to hire surveyors and have the plans redone. The customer was supposed to be responsible for the grading, concrete and wall build as well. Bennett Construction eventually had to provide these services too. At every progress payment the customer lagged well behind the promised dates to pay, creating further delays. At one point we received a text message that was intended for his wife, "Please let me borrow $15,000 so I can pay this guy". That payment was made more than two weeks late. Due to the numerous delays and additional work, this project became progressively more and more expensive. We had several discussions with the customer informing him of these additional costs and that there would be a final Change Order to be able to reach completion of project. We reached out to the customer multiple times informing him of additional costs and attempting to come to a resolution. After multiple attempts via phone, text, and email we received a text from the customer with every detail of how he intended to take over and run the project himself with no mention of his intention to pay the costs reflected on the change order. We continued reaching out to resolve the issue. We have never stopped trying to make contact. We never "walked off" the job, but we did discover that the customer had us removed from the project of his own accord. The project was approximately 70% complete when we were notified that the customer intended to finish the project himself. We have communications in writing and in a subpoena ready format that show conversation with this customer as of yesterday, Nov. 19, 2024 so the statement "unable to get a hold of him anymore" is clearly false as well. We remain willing to finish this project and have communicated this to the customer multiple times. Our phone number and email remain the same as does our commitment to taking care of our customers.
