It has been a frustrating experience. ~The contractor took original deposit of $20,000.00 on February 19, 2025. Construction start date was May 5, 2025. The time between deposit and start dates was to allow for planning and purchasing of all materials (tub, sinks, flooring, cabinetry, etc.) needed for Master and Guest Bathrooms as well as obtaining proper permits and licenses. ~He cancelled several appointments, had to come 4 times to get measurements and still did not have correct ones. ~He repeatedly avoided getting the proper building permits ~Before we hired him, we explained what we wanted, showed him specific items (cabinets, tub, etc) that he assured us would be no problem. Later, he could not obtain the cabinetry that we planned and wanted us to "accept" the option he had. ~My husband & I ultimately went to Home Depot, did all the leg-work, planning, meeting with their kitchen designer. All he had to do was confirm the dimensions and place the order using monies from our original deposit. He failed to do so even after stating on 4/4/2025 that he would do so that day. ~He left town for a "family emergency" on 4/8 without updating us on the order from days previous. I called Home Depot to find the order was not placed. ~When he returned on 4/12, he promised to "return my attention to my work". But still would not confirm items being ordered or status of permits. ~On April 16 11:59am Ron called, was very hostile. He started an argument and then said we should terminate the contract. He was expecting to keep our full deposit as he has a standard clause in his contracts stipulating it is "non-refundable". At signing, we discussed and stipulated "refundable if contractor does not meet his commitment". He then "offered" to repay us $12,500.00 on a payment plan but with the stipulation that we "involve no third party or make public statements" (during the phone conversation he named both the ROC and Angi as third parties). ~We declined, we told him he would need to honor the original contract and we were expecting the start date to remain 5/5/2025. We asked for him to meet with us to work out an amicable solution. ~We had a planned commitment that took us out of town from 4/20-5/4/2025 but were available by telephone, text, email. He did not respond/contact us. ~5/5/2025 No work began, no contact. ~5/6/2025 Ron called to schedule a meeting for 5/8/2025 at 3pm. ~5/8//2025 Ron arrived late. We discussed the issues, as Ron admitted he could not repay us we decided we would continue with him with added addendums to the contract. *We were advised by a lawyer to record conversations when possible (AZ is a one party consent state). These are available if needed. One thing he had to do is measure again because he still didn't have correct dimensions. We had to loan him our tape measure. ~5/8//2025 Ron arrived late. Hiring Bennett Construction has been one of the most stressful and financially damaging experiences my family has ever gone through. We hired Ron Bennett to build a casita and paid him in full, only for him to vanish without completing the job. Just days after picking up the final payment, he informed us he had declared bankruptcy. Ron Bennett admitted to using our project funds elsewhere, despite repeatedly assuring us that every dollar was going directly into our build. Throughout the process, communication was terrible?he would go weeks without responding to calls or texts. At one point, he even asked for a payment he had already received, claiming he never got it, which raised major red flags about how he was handling the finances. Now, we?re being harassed by unpaid subcontractors, many of whom were never paid by Bennett Construction and are threatening to file mechanics liens on our property. We did our part, paid everything we were asked, and are now left to deal with a legal
Response from Bennett Construction
"Hello. This is Ron Bennett, owner of Bennett Construction. It is with great sadness, and some chagrin, that I write this response. Working for Maria and [Consumer Name Removed] has been bittersweet. They have been wonderful clients, and never missed a beat, up to and including being very understanding of the necessity for change orders and small additional costs a couple of times. The fault here lies squarely with me. The simple answer is that I drastically underbid this project. I did all I could to bring the project in at that estimated price, but was unable to do so. It has been a very painful and costly lesson to learn, and I truly wish I had not learned it at these excellent young folks' expense. I would disagree some, as we had very good communication for the majority of the build, I have not abandoned the project, it is very well built and approximately 80% complete. Various issues compounded near the end of this project that I could not overcome. I have offered to remain the contractor on this project, suggesting the remaining subs be supervised by me in order that the job be completed, but paid directly by the homeowners, so that they (Maria and [Consumer Name Removed]) would not have to entrust me with any additional funds. Any thought of profit has been long since abandoned. I do not blame the homeowners in the slightest for the direction they have decided to adopt. At this point, my only wish is that their project get completed without any further headache, and I am available to discuss this with them, should they decide to do so."

Garage Building Service
$105,000
Referred by ANGI's List but clearly terrible decision. He walked off the job on me. Would never recommend him.
Response from Bennett Construction
"Bennett Construction was hired for a garage build. The customer signed the contract and then waited months to send the down payment. The original bid was made with the understanding that the plans and permit were already done. The original plans provided were unbuildable due to setback and electrical restrictions. Bennett Construction ended up having to hire surveyors and have the plans redone. The customer was supposed to be responsible for the grading, concrete and wall build as well. Bennett Construction eventually had to provide these services too. At every progress payment the customer lagged well behind the promised dates to pay, creating further delays. At one point we received a text message that was intended for his wife, "Please let me borrow $15,000 so I can pay this guy". That payment was made more than two weeks late. Due to the numerous delays and additional work, this project became progressively more and more expensive. We had several discussions with the customer informing him of these additional costs and that there would be a final Change Order to be able to reach completion of project. We reached out to the customer multiple times informing him of additional costs and attempting to come to a resolution. After multiple attempts via phone, text, and email we received a text from the customer with every detail of how he intended to take over and run the project himself with no mention of his intention to pay the costs reflected on the change order. We continued reaching out to resolve the issue. We have never stopped trying to make contact. We never "walked off" the job, but we did discover that the customer had us removed from the project of his own accord. The project was approximately 70% complete when we were notified that the customer intended to finish the project himself. We have communications in writing and in a subpoena ready format that show conversation with this customer as of yesterday, Nov. 19, 2024 so the statement "unable to get a hold of him anymore" is clearly false as well. We remain willing to finish this project and have communicated this to the customer multiple times. Our phone number and email remain the same as does our commitment to taking care of our customers. Submitted: 11/20/2024"

Bennett Construction installed rain gutters for my home; covered some unsightly nails in the ceiling of my She-Shed with drywall; and fabricated an awning above the side door in my garage, to prevent the rain from entering the room. Ron and his crew were very friendly and capable - providing expert planning and completion of all three projects. I must say, I only had to explain myself once - as to what was needed for my home. I can't say that about other companies I have used. The crew was on time, hard-working and finished in a timely manner. I would recommend them for any home project - large or small. They are simply the best!

Ron Bennett with his crew of John, Jay and Ronnie built me a patio cover, roofed it and painted plus built benches and shelves inside my shop. They worked very hard and considering the heat those days . The temperature was in excess of 115 degrees. John and the guys I would hire them in a minute. I even posted a short video of them working on Facebook and got over 200 views.

Owner never came back to review what his workers had completed. They didn't quite finish the job. Had someone else finish hand grading. I was disappointed in the representation.

These fellas were great. We tried doing it ourselves, but quickly realized we were over our heads. They got everything done in one day and were really nice and professional. If you are looking for a company to get your construction projects done, you can’t go wrong with Bennett Construction.
