Avoiding cleaning your gutters can damage not only your gutters and downspouts but also your roof and exterior of your home. Debris buildup in gutters can result in moisture not properly draining. Without a place to go, water and debris can start to eat away at your surrounding roof shingles, attic, insulation, and walls.

Seamless gutters last 20 years (or more) with proper maintenance. How long the gutters last depends on the material you choose. Vinyl gutters will only last for 10 to 15 years, whereas copper and zinc gutters can last 50 years or longer. Compared to sectional gutters, seamless gutters require far less maintenance and generally last longer.

First, you’ll want to remove rust stains with a scouring pad. Next, you’ll need to thoroughly clean the galvanized gutters with hot water and mild dish soap—once dry, wipe down the gutters with turpentine (available for around $10). Rain gutters should be level from front to back to prevent spillage as water runs from one side to the other. Horizontally, rain gutters should not be level. A slope of at least a 1/4-inch per 10 feet is recommended from the high end of a gutter to the downspout.
