I called Pat at Air-Zona as he had done a residential rooftop project for me several years prior.
Rather than just looking at the rating of the failed Carrier unit, Pat spent several hours onsite measuring and calculating the thermal efficiency of the house as required to apply for rebates from APS or SRP. BTW - if your contractor says that they'll give you the credit in your price and they'll handle the paperwork, they're just overcharging you for the job and not doing the work required to appropriately size the replacement unit.
Pat presented me with a quote that was fair along with the means to finance it. About a week after starting on the project, Pat and George (both owners) were pulling out the old system and installing the new. Everything contracted for was done to perfection, including cleanup. They had a total of 4 guys working on this attic project so it was done quickly and without fuss. Included in the quote, they added an air return in the master bedroom, replaced the existing return for the same modern look, installed new filters in both and put in a new programmable thermostat. They also scavenged the old compressor unit for a couple of 3 month-old parts and left those with me. Then, their scrap vendor arrived and removed the old unit before Air-Zona left the premises.
Just before they installed today, Pat indicated that the unit they were installing (a new American Standard split 13 SEER model) doesn't qualify for the APS energy credit. Although the SEER rating is sufficient the heat rating isn't (who cares in central AZ) so the promised $175 wasn't going to happen. Pat had already reduced the bill by $175 so I effectively got the rebate without having to wait.
I mentioned that Air-Zona had done an HVAC project for me several years back. It was during renovation of a friend's house in unincorporated Peoria. He lived beside a Glendale firefighter who is very handy but also knows who to go to for contractors. Air-Zona was his recommendation. I solicited bids from 5 companies and Air-Zona had the best proposal, nearly the best price and the equipment they install is top-notch. Air-Zona will steer you to an honest, economical solution using bulletproof equipment.
By the way, the piece of Carrier junk was originally installed by Chas Roberts during the boom. The air handler in the attic was rusted out ten years after installation. Amazing.
