I called Kobar's for an estimate after having been serviced here in the past (also with good experiences). I previously visited Greulich's in Mesa for an oil change and they informed me that my brakes were very close to being metal on metal (which was true) and that I needed them replaced within the next few months. They gave me a quote of $340 (without a 15% labor discount factored in, also without taxes). This seemed incredibly high to me - $340 for new front brakes? The manager also told me that I can "bring my car elsewhere, they'll offer me a better deal, but in the end they will end up charging me hundreds more for services I don't need."
Well, I called Kobar's and got a quote of $140 over the phone. They were able to immediately take my car in to be sure that's the only service I need and after that, immediately took the car in to re-do the brakes. They were able to do the same work for $200 less and have an A rating here with many reviews... so I'm trusting that their work is just as good, if not better, than Greulich, who was clearly trying to sell me on outrageously priced services using scare tactics.
I was incredibly happy with my service at Kobar's and opted for a $47 cleaning on the back brakes to keep them more even with the new front brakes. The manager explained the process to me, why I may want to consider it, but did not push it on me. He seemed baffled when I mentioned the quote of $340 from Greulich - rightfully so.
I will definitely be bringing my car here in the future. Their prices, services, and quality of work are all better than any I've found here in the Mesa area.

This was one of the best experiences I've had with an auto shop. They didn't try to sell unneccessary services or replacements, and the owner staffs the front desk. I am a woman driving an older vehicle and most shops see dollar signs when I ask them to and quot;check everything.and quot; Not Kobars. The owner told me all I needed that day was an oil change and a little air in the tires. This family-owned business has earned my trust; I'll be back.

They came and got my vehicle within 30 minutes of my phone call and called me a couple times with status. It was fixed and ready to be picked up 2.5 hours later. They were quick, friendly, very fairly priced and professional. I will definitely be using them again in the future.

Always good results on basic services like oil change. Where they really stand out is their fair dealing when there could be an opportunity to gouge the customer for more expensive repairs.
A recent example is when I obtained an estimate from the dealer to replace front and side engine mounts and a transmission flush for a total of $761. Kobar performed the same repairs for $349. Have had numerous other repairs performed by them, several with similar price differentials. On occasion they even concluded repairs were not needed when other mechanics had suggested they were. Always been satisfied with their work, their explanations, and their honesty.
Keep up the good work, Gene and John!

John was awesome. I dropped off vehicle and shared what I was experiencing and what I potentially thought might be causing the problems. John contacted me a couple of hours later and went into detail about his diagnosis and what he thought needed to be done and what wasn't needed at this time. I decided to go with his suggestions, which actually saved me from having to replace the clutch (John strongly suggested that there was still significant life left in it and that repair wasn't necessary at this time). He could have easily replaced the clutch (at least a $900 repair) but sincerely was looking out for my best interest. How rare is that!
They installed a new steering dampner which improved the wobble dramatically and at a very reasonable cost. I would eagerly recommend KOBAR to others as I felt they were extremely professional, reasonably priced, and even though they could have done additional work for a quick profit, they looked out for my best interest and did not take advantage of a non-mechanic.
I have additional vehicles that have minor repair needs and I will be giving all my business to KOBAR going forward!

I have been to Kobar's several times and have always been impressed with their honesty, professionalism, and their willingness to take time to answer questions. The first time I went was to get an estimate to rebuild my transmission on my 2006 Jeep Wrangler Sport. I had been shopping around and already had several estimates. Gene Kobar mentioned that they don't perform the service themselves and recommended me to transmission repair which saved me a couple thousand dollars compared to the estimates I had received. Gene provided me a great recommendation and I was very happy with the transmission shop he referred me to.
Most recently, they replaced my starter and had my vehicle back to me in several hours. I was very happy with the quick turn-around and have not had any issues with the work they performed. I felt the price was very reasonable. I feel that Kobar's auto is very trustworthy and I value that very much when it comes to vehicle repairs. Unlike many other car repair shops, they did not pressure me to have additional repairs and provided honest answers regarding other vehicle services, even mentioning that some services I inquired about were not necessary.

I called Kobar's for a price on a water pump replacement and was surprised when John asked if I had the part or not. It turns out they gave me a quote with me buying the part separately or if they purchased it and they installed it. Naturally I was surprised to learn this option, but they said in this economy it was a way for their customers to save some money. Naturally if the customer buys the part Kobar only warranties the labor and not the part which is only fair. I ended up buying the part separately which did save me some money. I brought the car and part to the shop, John quoted me the price again to confirm, he promised me it would be done by a certain time , which it was, they called to say it was done, it was the same price as quoted. These guys are great. I am definitely going to refer them to anyone who needs car service.

My Dad is a skeptic but likes this place. He said most of the people that came in had been going thee for years and knew the mechanics by name. He liked it a lot and that's not easy to do. The price wasn't dirt cheap or anything but I think it was fair considering the compressor was $450 by it's self. All you can ask for is fair right?

Like always, they were very knowledgeable. They told us that the age of the car would produce those sounds. They gave us a couple of things that could have been replaced, but they didn't recommend the repairs because of the extra cost. I even called them when I was on a trip out of state. I had some problems, and they talked me through it over the phone. I was able to get the car going. They will even spend time on the phone telling you what to do if you aren't within a decent distance of the shop.

Kobar's was very friendly on the phone so based on that and the Angie's list I took my car there since they are only about a mile from my house. I needed an oil change, tire rotation, new front brakes, and my engine light was on. The brakes needed more than just the pads and needed new rotors because they said the rotors were to thin to be "turned". The engine light turned out to be an engine thermometer. I checked their prices to fix everything vs. Repairpal.com and driverside.com and they were below the median prices shown there which is why I gave them a "B" on prices. They were very nice however there was something that happened that has caused me not to go back. Knowing that I am spending over $800 there I asked them if they honor competitor's coupons. They said yes when in reason. Well Kobar's had a $79.99 price for reading the engine light. I provided them in hand with a competitor's coupon saying they will read the engine light for free (probably knowing that they will make their money when you have them fix it for you right there). Even after knowing I was already spending over $800 there at first he said he couldn't accept that because "That's how the guys get paid". To me that was unacceptable. He then took $20 of the $80 dollars off. However by not honoring the coupon especially since I was already spending a lot of money that has caused me not to go back there again. I wonder if not waiving the additional $60 and honoring the coupon was worth losing a customer that was happy until that point?

When I went to the dealer for some routine recall adjustments, they recommended numerous additional services, so I got a second opinion from Kobar. They found that a dealer-quoted repair for $420 was not needed, then performed those that were needed for $286 vs dealer quoted $437. This affirms my previous experience with them that they do not perform unnecessary work. They were courteous and efficient, and as far as I can tell the work is high quality. I have searched forever for a trustworthy mechanic, and I hope I have finally found one.

I called and Gene Kobar (the owner) answered the phone. I described the issue with my truck (front end was shimmying when I slowed down) and noted that I thought the rotors needed to be turned but that the brake pads might also need to be changed. I asked if I could bring it in 1st thing the next morning. He opened at 7:00am and said I could. I arrived at about 6:55am and the store was already open and serving customers. I described the issue, mentioned that I had no idea how much work would have to be done. He said it sounded like the rotors needed to be turned, which would be $90. He said that if more work was needed, he would call. About 8:45am he called and said the truck was ready and all that was required was for the rotors to be turned, so the total bill was $90. Everything went exceptionally well.

Prior to making a trip from the SF bay area to Gilbert, AZ, I had a lot of preventative work done to my truck. But the one thing I forgot was to check the air conditioning. My A/C went out on my way into southern California (as I drove down the Grapevine). A search of the list for Gilbert brought me to Kobar's. I dealt with John Kobar. They found that the clutch fan could be stopped by pressing with one's hand, and it probably wasn't moving enough air to cool the compressor which had burnt out. I had been expecting a big bill for this repair because I figured the compressor had gone out. Plus, I had California plates and was obviously at their mercy. I was very pleased when the estimate was very reasonable, and the work was completed on time. I only wish I had asked for a ride home instead of walking the three miles in 100 degree heat. Did you know that 60-year olds can get a prickly heat rash?

They are an established family owned company and the two brothers explain everything. They do not do anything that is not neccessary. Their price is low compared to others.
