Barely two and a half months later, I returned home from a trip, and the next morning I noticed the condenser wasn't working. So I called the company, and to their credit, they had someone at the house around 9 a.m. I appreciated their early arrival.
My wife called me at work and passed the phone to Al, the service tech. He quoted me $530 to replace a contactor. That seemed crazy high to me. So I asked the cost to replace the whole condenser unit. He said $2,800, which also seemed crazy high. I agreed to have the contactor replaced. What can I say? It was 110 degrees, and I'd be working till late. I placed some trust in the guy.
To American Cooling and Heating's credit, they got the AC up and running fast after two hours work. And I've read other reviews of folks who paid similar prices to get their units running.
Unfortunately for me, I did some research after the fact. Al told me the cost to replace the contactor was $180, though from talking to friends and other providers, the part itself cost at the most $50. Al said the price to replace the capacitor was $172, though again, the price was very high in light of the low cost of the part, which takes minimal time to install.
There was still around $200 remaining balance on the bill. Al explained that charge was for maintenance of the unit. Again, the company had performed tune-up maintenance on the unit just two and half months earlier. And keep in mind, on this final trip to the house where he said he performed a second tune-up, he never once set foot inside the house.
In the time since, I've learned that although either a contactor or a capacitor may fail and cause your condenser unit to quit working, it's rare that they go out simultaneously. It also took several phone calls to American Cooling and Heating for Al to explain his handwritten invoice to me.
The funny thing is that he may have finally responded because he wrote down the wrong date for the expiration of my credit card. At the time, I was still giving him benefit of the doubt, so I gave him the correct date. When I explained my concerns to Al, he said he would pay a courtesy visit to my home in November to perform maintenance on the unit. I'll see if he arrives.
I would have been more impressed had he agreed to adjust the bill to a more reasonable level.
Again, some folks may praise an AC company for arriving in quick time to save them on a hot day. But let's face it: Many AC companies gouge their customers during heat waves. I can attest to that. And if that doesn't leave a sour taste in your mouth, should you leave any less violated if a mechanic in a desolate stretch of highway charges you $500 for a new radiator? Same principle.
As it is now, I've spent a total of $740 with this company for maintenance and a minor repair. I'm also stuck knowing I got ripped off and that any problem I had may have come from someone sabotaging the unit on that first trip.
I wanted to find a provider I could use year after year for maintenance and eventually a new system. But American Cooling and Heating won't get anymore of my business or money. I can't trust them.
Also, notice when you call, that the estimate they give you will depend on your home's location. Keep in mind, too, that techs for larger companies are paid on commission, so it's in their best interest to charge you high and leave quickly.
If anyone at American Cooling and Heating would agree to make things right with me, I'd share that news here.
I would definitely use them again!
