Turf and Sport LLC was started by Mike Alexander in 2004 under the name ForeverLawn Arizona LLC. ForeverLawn Arizona LLC sold and installed the premium brand of ForeverLawn turf for both residential and commercial projects. While Turf & Sport LLC is still the exclusive provider of ForeverLawn Turf for Phoenix and Tucson, we have grown from a turf installation company to a full service provider including turf installation, distribution, and athletic field maintenance. Installation went fine and the company was fine to deal with at the time of installation. The problem came in 3 or 4 years down the road.
I don't recall exactly when the installation took place - I included 3/1/11 as the date of service, above, because a specific date in that box is required and it's my best guess. I also don't recall the specific amount I paid and, again, $5000 is my best recollection.
In any event, the artificial turf looked good upon installation and for the first couple of years or so afterward. Then it deteriorated heavily and looked terrible. The company refused to stand behind their product and told me, in effect, that I was on my own.
I thought the problem was that the rubber fill needed to be replenished and the grass fluffed up with a power rake such as was used on the turf at the time of installation. The grass had been looking pretty shabby for a while and in March 2015, I finally called the company and made an appointment for them to come fluff up the turf and add fill.
Upon arrival, the fellow told me that the grass was irreparably damaged from reflected heat off nearby windows. Fluffing the turf and adding fill wouldn't help, he said, but he'd give it a try.
He was right, fluffing and fill did nothing but he still charged me $150. He also said that because the damage was caused by reflected heat, it was not covered under warranty.
However, the reflected heat damage claim is complete nonsense for two reasons and the company apparently just didn't want to spend the money to honor the warranty:
1) External automatic sun shades cover the windows each day without fail at all times the sun shines on them. The shades go up and down on a timer. The shades were in place when the turf was installed and have never failed to function. The fellow from Turf&Sport wouldn't respond when I told him about the shades, rather choosing to just keep saying it was reflected heat damage.
2) Within the last couple of months, I had three artificial turf companies provide estimates for replacing the turf. Each company said that reflected heat wasn't the cause of the damage to the old turf. First, each said reflected heat damage occurs in a signature pattern with very distinct edges between the heat damaged area and the undamaged area. That pattern was not present in my turf so regardless of the sun shades, reflected heat wasn't an issue.
The real proof that reflected heat was just an excuse for Turf&Sport to evade it's responsibility is that the company I finally hired to replace the turf explicitly stated in their warranty that reflected heat didn't cause the damage to the old turf and that, in fact, there is no source of reflected heat present. In effect, the new company explicitly stated in their written warranty that the warranty will never be denied on the basis of reflected heat. The new company didn't even require that I keep the sun screens on the nearby windows operational. And it's a 15 year warranty!
If reflected heat was even potentially a problem, it's hard to imagine another company explicitly agreeing in advance that it is not. The fact of the matter appears to be that Turf&Sport, f/k/a Forever Lawn, is a bad outfit that won't stand behind what they sell.
Interestingly enough, the companies who provided bids for the turf replacement told me that along about the time my original turf was installed, there was bad turf being supplied from China (my new turf is American made) and a lot of it deteriorated pretty rapidly once installed. Their guess is that was the problem with my lawn. I don't know if my old turf was the bad junk from China or not, but it looks like it was.
The Turf&Sport warranty also bears mention for more reason than just the made up excuses to not honor it. First, the warranty is only 8 years, which may sound like a lot but isn't. When getting my turf replaced, I discovered that warranties on good turf vary from 10-15 years.
Second, the Turf&Sport warranty provides for replacement of defective turf without cost for only 2 years. Each year after that, you have to pay "20% plus 8% of price for each year from original purchase date." I'm not sure exactly what that means, but it sounds like in year 3 you'd pay 28% of the replacement cost, 56% in year 4, 84% in year 5, then a whopping 112% - 168% in years 6-8. I guess I should have waited a couple more years to make the warranty claim until I would have had to pay them much more than the job cost in the first place. Some warranty even if they honor it!
This is just a bad company in my opinion and experience and should never have another customer.
