The original price quote was $1,000 for labor and we provided the material.  The completed job looked fair except the center of the patio sagged where it wasn't leveled which became worse after it rained.  The retaining wall looked good until it rained and then it fell down.  It was discovered after it fell that he built it wrong.  The extra $400 was for material; gravel, dirt, and 2 - 4 x 4 posts that was not discussed ahead of time and we didn't find out about until he was done and surprised us with the bill. 
After the retaining wall fell we contacted him to have him come back out and fix it.  We exchanged texts several times and he said he couldn't work on it in the rain.  He also argued that it would cost an additional $400 to repair the wall and that it wasn't a retaining wall.  In the price quote he said it was a retaining wall but after it fell said it was only decretive.  He scheduled to be out on Wednesday to make the repairs but instead showed up a day early, didn't notify us he was there and just went out back and started working.  When they finished they didn't come to the door or tell us they were done even though we were home the whole time.  To add insult to injury they did put the wall back up, but to anchor it they drove rebar down in from of the blocks so we now have exposed rusty rebar against the face of a decretive retaining wall and they chipped the concrete blocks with the hammers and rebar when they pounded them in.
