I called Steamers Carpet Cleaner because I picked up their card at a local carpet store. When I called, I explained I had a small kitchen and dining area in tile that I was considering having steam cleaned (because of grease buildup from former tenants). I was told they had a minimum service charge of $75 and that would cover the area I described. That was agreeable and said I would likely call back to schedule an appointment.
A few days later I called back and said I would like to also have the tile in the two bathrooms, and other small areas at the entry door and a two foot wide area upstairs if their minimum fee would cover those areas, too. I told the lady I spoke with the total square footage of the tile I was describing (approximately 300 sq. ft.) and invited someone to come out to bid the job, if they would like. She assured me the $75 minimum fee would cover everything I described, so I made an appointment.
Two guys were already on site cleaning the [vacant] house when I arrived on the scheduled day. One laborer and one guy that told me he was an owner. (I remember this because I jokingly said his name didn't match the name of the "owner" listed on the business card, at which time the guy gave me some explanation about how it was complicated, yada, yada, yada; and it was just easier for him to blah, blah, blah. Anywho... I digress.) I had only been there a couple of minutes when the guys finish cleaning the kitchen/dining area and start packing up. When I realized they were packing up to leave, I asked the "owner" (not "Tony", but one of the other guys in the picture on their website) if they weren't going to do the rest of the tile. He asked me, "what tile", and I explained the tile in the rest the house and walked him through the house to show him the two bathroom floors and the other two small spots. (It didn't take long. It's only a 2000 sq. ft. house including the bonus room upstairs.) I told him I talked to the lady on the phone about everything, and he walked outside and huffed to his worker that they had to do some more.
I noticed that while the worker was steaming the tile, the owner started measuring the areas. He then told me that they charge different prices depending on how dirty the tile is, but that they would stick to the low end of $.40/sqft (I think. It might have been .45) and that the cost would be $120 (or $125?, I don't remember for sure). Anywho, I told him I was quoted $75 and recited the same story to him I just described above. He said, "Okay, I'd rather you be happy" and went on about his business. I thought the issue was settled.
After they were done, only a few minutes later, I told the guy I was going to give him a hundred dollars, as I was writing the check, just to be nice and show that I wasn't trying to pull anything over on anyone. (Up to that point, I thought it was a simple miscommunication between they the guy that showed up and the lady I had been talking to on the phone.) It was at this time that the guy said that with tax it would be more than that. What??? I thought I was giving the guy a tip, and he wanted to make sure I added tax to it??? Turns out, he went on to explain that the total would be $135-something. (I don't remember the exact amount as I never got the receipt emailed to me that I was promised.) I thought the guy had lost his mind and asked him if we had not just discussed this and resolved it when he said that it was more important to him that I be happy if i was expecting $75. He clarified that they just can't do it for $75.
Although I shouldn't have, I was so ticked off at that point, I just wrote him a check for the amount he WANTED and pointed out that it would be the last business I ever did with them. In all fairness, he did say I could just pay the $75 if it would make me happy AFTER I wrote out the check for $135 in front of him, but at that point it had nothing to do with the money. I can only assume he needed the extra $50 way worse than I did. haha
To top it all off... After all of the tile dried (and obviously long after they were gone) I could see that the tile in the kitchen (which was by far the dirtiest) was about as clean as I had hoped it would be. The tile in the rest of the house, though (that they cleaned so quickly) didn't look much better than it did before.
In conclusion, I emailed the company through their website and got no response. (Nor have I ever received a receipt although - as I just now looked to see - my check for $135.78 was deposited.) I also posted an online review through some review link I received in an automated email from them that did not show up with the rest of their reviews. (Only 5 star reviews and one 4 star review are included on their website - imagine that.) I just posted a truncated review on their site again to see if it shows up and then joined Angie's list just so I could share my experience.
Bottom line: All I ask is that people do what they say they will do. These folks, did not. :(
UPDATE: The lady I spoke with on the phone called me a couple of days after my review at the request of the owner. She was very polite and apologetic for my experience. She asked what they could do to get me to change my review and offered to refund my money. I explained that my complaint did not arise from her actions, but the guy that showed up and that I was appreciative of her concern, but that it wasn't about the money. The experience was what it was and giving me my money back simply would not change it. I went on to explain that even if I felt I should get a refund, it would only be for the amount above the quote. I concluded the conversation by explaining that I would consider updating my review to tell her efforts.
The owner texted me later (Tony - not the one that showed up) and asked me to call him if I had time. I explained I was busy at that moment and that I had already visited with his employee that he asked to call me and that I was confident she would convey my feelings. I received a check for the entire amount, along with a note a couple of days later.

I withdraw my review in protest of Angie's List meddling in politics. I want nothing further to do with Angie's List and withdraw my name from anything associated with it.
