"Nick, Caden and the crew took care of a MASSIVE job for me, including a new roof and associated repairs, and tearing down/cleaning up an old pole barn a storm destroyed last year. The heat was unbearable and the job understandably took a little longer, but they got it done. Caden's work on the pole barn was unbearably difficult and even dangerous. I couldn't afford to get the whole thing removed, but at least it's down to a somewhat manageable level of disaster. Nick and Caden had to deal with a stressed out homeowner with limited finances that was agonizing over every detail and in an environment that would test the most hardy person, with 100 degree heat, stinging wasps and mosquitoes the size of crop dusters. They were polite and managed to find a solution to almost every issue. I'm surprised this job didn't send Caden running for the hills, but he's a sturdy lad with a strong work ethic and Nick has great customer service skills and really tries to take care of the customer's needs. I now have a new metal roof and my property shows hope of no longer looking like a tornado zone in a few years. Definitely give these guys a call if you need work done. They work hard for their money!"

Pole Barn Builders questions, answered by experts

If you’re building a pole barn in place of a traditional home, lenders usually don’t offer traditional mortgages for these structures. You can also expect higher insulation costs and building permits may not be allowed in your area. Even if you’re just using a pole barn as storage or as a shelter for animals, these structures are less durable than steel buildings and require more maintenance.

It is recommended that you check with your local building official on barn building requirements and rules, since size restrictions vary greatly from region to region based on what your property is zoned for. Some cities limit barn construction depending on if your property is residential or commercial. The three main factors your building commission will evaluate are:

  • Height and lot coverage: How tall your barn is and how much of your total property it occupies

  • Setback: Distance between barn and property line

  • Easement: Legal right for another owner to access another’s property

The best lumber for building will be the strongest and most eco-friendly wood your budget allows. That being said, Douglas fir, pine, oak, and maple are all common building materials. Contractors will use a strong, inexpensive wood to frame a house or other structure and finer woods like mahogany for detail work.

You can use a variety of wood to build a barn door, but the most common options include 1-by boards and 2-by boards for the backing and the decorative boards on the front of the door. Softwoods like pine will save you some money and should hold up well, while hardwoods like maple and oak will stand up to more wear and tear. You could also build the backer out of plywood to minimize the cuts you need to make. Whatever you decide on, make sure the width of the wood is compatible with the mounting brackets you buy.

If you can’t repair and repurpose your shed, it might be possible to sell it, donate it, or salvage parts rather than them just ending up in a landfill. Professional junk removal services will advise you on what can and will be recycled. You may also want to keep some parts to upcycle them for other projects around your home. Turning planks from your memory-filled wooden shed into a coffee table or bed headboard is good for the environment and the soul.
