IhiredJackie Tompkins to level my daughter's house. Mr. Tompkins told me that it would be dangerous and could cause damage and that it was a job that required a professional to successfully level the house. I recognized by this why it would cost so much to get the house leveled and was willing to pay this amount for a professional job. The first thing I noticed was that aside from purchasing materials, the job only took his workers a few hours to complete. When he described the job beforehand, he told me that it would take several days. I was ok with the time spent on the repair, but when I walked through the house after the job was completed, I felt the floor slope down in certain areas and the front storm door would drag on the floor when opened or closed. There were other issues that concerned me related to the leveling of the house. When I asked him if he would resolve these issues, he told me that the house would "settle in" and be fine. As I asked more questions about the house, he became irritated and told me that the best thing I could do is not worry about it. Since the job came with a two year warranty, I decided to let some time go by. He recommended a few things that I should get done like working on the drainage around the house so that water would flow away from the house. The ground under the house was totally dry at the time of the repair, we were in the middle of a severe drought at that time. I had the lot graded within a couple of weeks for proper drainage. For the next year and ten months I had the house completely remodeled. We just put up with the leveling problems since we had the two year warranty. My thought was to wait until two months before the warranty was out and get everything related to the leveling of the house done then. So I called Mr. Tompkins two months before the warranty expired and arranged to resolve the issues I had with the house. He came out on the day we agreed on, but about thirty minutes early. I almost missed him since I had to drive twenty minutes to get there, but the carpenter who remodeled the house saw his truck there and called me. When I got there, he already had his worker under the house leveling the obvious problem areas. I remained in the house trying to locate any problem areas, and trying to notice anything that was a problem. At one point, Mr. Tompkins walked outside and after a couple of minutes I looked out the window and noticed that they were loading up their tools and getting ready to leave. There were still doors that would rub and some that would not close or latch and had obvious gaps on the edges of the doors, above, below and on the sides. Also, the hallway was still sloped and could easily be felt as you walked through it. The master bedroom closet was also low and could be noticed just by looking, not needing a level to varify it. I then asked Mr. Tompkins if he resolve these issues. He had his worker get the tools back out of the truck and go under the house again. He jacked up the floor and corrected many of the problems. Mr. Tompkins then said that the other issues would "settle in" and be fine. Mr.Tompkins and his worker left at this time. I called my daughter the next day to ask how everything was related to the leveling job and she said that the master bedroom floor was very shaky, so bad that when someone would walk through the bedroom, the entertainment center in the bedroom would wobble and clang. My daughter said that they would walk very softly through that area because they were afraid that if they didn't, something would fall off the entertainment center and break. I called Mr. Tompkins within a day of finding this out and after about five attempts his wife answered and said that she would have him call me. After a few more days he called and arranged to come and correct the problem that coming Friday. Well, he never showed up. I then made at least ten attempts and left messages for him to call me with no success. I desperately tried to contact him before the warranty expired, although the concerns I had with the house occurred well within the warranty period. I felt like he was avoiding me so that the warranty would expire and therefore end his obligation to the contract. He avoided me for about one month, I gave him plenty of time to respond in order to address the leveling issues, but he never returned my calls or notified me in any way. I am totally disgusted and completely dissatisfied with his workmanship and attitude. I have asked around about his reputation and discovered that I am not the only person he has treated this way. He is known for leaving a customer "hanging". I thought I hired a professional since his ad in the local paper (business directory) said that he had 34 years experience, but now feel like I wasted my money. I had the carpenter/plumber,who remodeled the house for me, go under the house to check the work done by Mr. Tompkins and he said that the workmanship was very inadequate. There were gaps between the support beams and floor joists, not enough supports, and many supporting points were positioned on broken cinder blocks that were found under the house and sometimes they were cocked over to the side. I personally replaced the supports that had broken because of improper positioning or that rolled out of position because of  inadequate supports (pieces of cinder block)  I tried my best  to keep from disturbing him unnecessarily, but the bottom line is that I paid a lot of money but got a "quickie" job! I hope no one else will make the mistake of hiring Mr. Tompkins like I did.
