Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel
Yes, I recommend this pro
$3,000
Overall, the project went well. This contractor removed the old tub & enclosure, the toilet, vanity and sink.
FLOOR:  The old floor was 4-inch tile, with chipping and missing grout, that had been installed using the old method of pouring concrete, then laying the tile on top, so it had to be broken into pieces for removal.  Then particle board subfloor was discovered under that, and had to be replaced with plywood.  Finally, new 12-inch tile was layed, with a 4-inch tile baseboard.
WALLS:  Initially I was going to keep the same walls which were tiled up about half way, but an old leak was discovered to have caused drywall damage and mold at floor level, so I decided to have that removed and the drywall replaced.  I had a texture on the top half of the wall which was rather new, so only the tiled part of the drywall was removed.  New drywall was installed and molding was put in place to cover the seam between the new drywall and the textured upper drywall.  The wall area above the new shower surround was covered with vinyl panel that was trimmed out with molding.
CEILING:  Since the bathroom is rather small, the ceiling drywall was replaced rather than the popcorn being removed.
DOORS:  New six-panel entrance and linen closet doors were installed.
MISC:  Walls and ceiling were painted with flat, then semi-gloss paint.  The doors, facings and molding were also painted.  Towel bar and tissue holder were installed, although not where I had marked for them to be installed.
The work took about 4 or 5 days, as tile had to set as well as drywall mud, before the next steps could be performed.
This contractor arrived when scheduled, and worked to finish the job as quickly as possible, even though I made some changes along the way.
I was not informed as to how the refuse from the job was going to be dumped out at the curb without being on a tarp or cardboard.  I live in the county where there are no fines for doing such, but after the county picked up the bulk of it, I had stray refuse (chunks of tile, concrete and particle board) that I had to pick up for days afterward.  This could have been avoided if it  had all been dumped on a tarp or cardboard rather than directly on the ground.
The contractor has his wife and sister-in-law help on his jobs and some details are left to them while he is working on the construction.  When they were on the job they tended to use my personal home supplies such as paper towels, vacuum, broom and dustpan, etc.  I wasn't crazy about that because concrete and drywall dust gets in the tools and then make a mess in the rest of your house if you don't clean them out first.
I looked over these last two items because it is extremely difficult to find an honest, skilled remodeler for small jobs in my area.
