Bob M.
Aug 2009
Willie showed up on time for the job. With him were two assistants, one of whom was a Mexican immigrant who did not speak English. They got to work promptly. Willie directed while his assistants did the work. They were very fast, digging both trenches with shovels, not power tools. While one of the trenches seemed to be in the right place, the other one did not. I kept trying to explain that it did not seem to start where all the water was collecting (i.e., the lowest place in the yard) and that it appeared to be going uphill. Willie kept trying to explain to me why this was the right place; he also said that if it needed to be changed, they would come back at no charge. While Willie was gone to get the gravel, the assistants finished the digging and had nothing to do. I offered to pay them to dig a pretty big hole for a tree I needed to plant. I called Willie to make sure he approved of this, which he did. I spoke to the worker who did speak English and told him I had $30 (a twenty and two fives); he said that he would keep the $20 bill and give the person who did not speak English the two $5 bills! I let them start the work; while they were working, I came inside and counted out another $10 from our change jar. Once the work was completed, I gave the non-English speaker the $20 bill and the other guy the two $5 bills and the $10 in change. One of the drains had a grate-type collection box. Willie was talking about how expensive all his materials were, stating that those collection boxes were $70. This seemed unlikely to me, considering that the box was a 10-inch plastic cube with a hole on one side and a grate on top. When I called Willie after our next big rain to see when he could come fix it, he said that he might have to install a collection box on that side, too, and that I would need to pay for the parts. Now, however, these collection boxes had mysteriously gone up to $140. I went to Lowe's (website) and found the exact same box for less than $30. I called Willie several times about coming back to fix the work. He was always either coming this weekend or was going to call me to set up a time; needless to say, I have not ever seen him.
