SEE PREVIOUS QUESTION. IT DID NOT GO WELL AT ALL. MY HUSBAND HAD TO REDO MANY THINGS AND PROVIDE MATERIALS FOR SUBS WHO SHOWED UP EXPECTING ITEMS TO BE THERE. HUSBAND PROVIDED SAFETY EQUIPMENT TO SUBS WHO DID NOT BRING ANY. HUSBAND PROVIDED TOOLS AND LADDERS TO CONTRACTOR AND SUBS WHO DID NOT BRING THEM OR THE SPECS.
Description of Work: THIS WAS AN ADDITION TO AN EXISITING 3 BEDROOM HOME. CONTRACTOR POURED A SLAB THAT WAS UNEVEN AND UNLEVEL AND DID NOT MEET OLD SLAB LEVEL. CONTRACTOR "FORGOT" TO LEAVE ELECTRICAL AND GAS LINES IN SLAB FOR ISLAND KITCHEN. CONTRACTOR PROVIDED INCORRECT WINDOWS NOT IN SPECS. CONTRACTOR FAILED TO PROVIDE MATERIALS FOR HIS SUBCONTRACTORS. CONTRACTOR USED MINORS TO DO LABOR. WE LIVED IN THE HOUSE DURING CONSTRUCTION AND CONTRACTOR LEFT HOLES IN PARTITIONS AND TARPS FOR HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING TO ESCAPE. CONTRACTOR FAILED TO MEET DEADLINES AND FAILED TO ANSWER CALLS. MUCH WORK HAD TO BE REDONE. CONTRACTOR'S PLUMBER MIXED UP HOT AND COLD WATER CONNECTIONS AND THE WAX BENEATH THE TOILET MELTED AND HAD TO BE RESET. CONTRACTOR FAILED TO PROVIDE SUBCONTRACTOR TO PUT IN GLASS BRICK SHOWER. PLUMBING HAD TO BE MOVED AFTER INSTALLED BECAUSE IT DID NOT FIT CABINETRY WHICH HE PROVIDED. ETC., ETC. ETC. ALTHOUGH THIS BUILDER CONTRACTED TO DO OUR HOME 9 YEARS AGO, WE HAVE HEARD FROM OUR ATTORNEY THAT HE HAS HAD NUMEROUS SUITS AGAINST HIM SINCE OUR EXPERIENCE. THE OWNER'S NAME IS HARVEY BREWER. HE GAVE THE LOW BID TO REMODEL AND ADD ON TO OUR EXISTING HOUSE IN JUNE 2000. HE PROMISED TO BE DONE IN 2-3 MONTHS. AFTER THE INITIAL FRAMING, HIS CREW DID NOT APPEAR FOR WEEKS. HIS SUBCONTRACTORS WOULD SHOW UP EXPECTING MATERIALS TO BE HERE AND THEN LEAVE BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT DO THE WORK WITHOUT THE MATERIALS. THEY HAD TO BE RESCHEDULED AND THEREFORE THOSE SUBCONTRACTORS BEHIND THEM HAD TO BE RESCHEDULED. MY HUSBAND BEGAN SUPPLYING THE MATERIALS SO THAT WE COULD GET THE HOUSE DONE. WE MADE ON TIME PROGRESS PAYMENTS TO MR. BREWER EVEN THOUGH HE WAS NOT MAKING PROGRESS. WE WANTED THE HOUSE COMPLETED. HIS WORK CREWS NEVER HAD THE SPECS WITH THEM AND PUT IN INFERIOR MATERIALS. WE HAD TO ASK HIM TO REPLACE SEVERAL ITEMS. HE CONSIDERED THIS INTERFERING WITH THIS JOB. FINALLY IN DECEMBER HE CAME TO THE HOUSE TO DISCUSS HIS "PUNCH LIST," WHICH WAS PRETTY FUNNY SINCE WE DIDN'T HAVE GAS OR WATER OR THE FIREPLACE AND HAD SERIOUS ISSUES WITH THE MASTER BATH. HE GOT VERY HEATED AND YELLED AT ME. MY HUSBAND STEPPED BETWEEN US AND HE SAID THA'T 'ASSAULT'. FORTUNATELY WE HAD TWO SEARS WORKERS THERE TO WITNESS ALL THIS. HE WALKED OUT AND NEVER CAME BACK. SIX MONTHS LATER HE SUED US FOR THE BALANCE OF THE CONTRACT SAYING WE HAD FORCED HIM OFF THE JOB. WE COUNTERSUED ASKING FOR THE PRICE OF THE MATERIALS WE PURCHASED PLUS THE COST OF FINISHING THE JOB. IT TURNED OUT HE HAD BEEN SUED BEFORE, OWNED NOTHING IN HIS NAME, AND HAD PREVIOUSLY DECLARED BANKRUPTCY. WE SETTLED WITH HIM SO THAT WE COULD GET THE MECHANICS LIENS TAKEN OFF OUR TITLE AND BECAUSE COLLECTING FROM HIM LOOKED LIKE A LONG SHOT. SINCE THEN, OTHER SUITS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT AGAINST HIM. WE DISCOVERED THAT THE CONTRACTOR'S BOARD DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO MAKE A COMPLAINT IF THE MATTER HAS GONE TO LITIGATION OR THERE IS A LAWSUIT PENDING. NICE CATCH-22. WE VIGOROUSLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT USE THIS BUILDER IN THE ELMORE COUNTY OR TALLAPOOSA COUNTY AREA.
