We of course told him we no longer needed his service.
"This is a valid complaint. I do apologize to the customers for this failure. I shouldn't have accepted their request for a quote and service. It was a small and low priority job since it only involved stump grinding. We were running three to four weeks behind schedule and didn't have sufficient time to properly service their needs. After the past several years, it is hard to tell someone that their job is too small or you can't meet their schedule but due to a backlog of work; we will have to start doing so to avoid issues like this. I had a new home under contract. Asked the builder to recommend a Tree Guy because the builder agreed to pay to remove or trim back several trees that were too close to the home and/or leaning precariously past the roof line. The builder gave me Ickes's name so I called. I explained the situation to the young woman who answered the phone. She sounded confused as though time spent with a POTENTIAL homeowner would be a waste of time. Said she'd check with Mr. Ickes and call back.
A day later, she did.
Mr. Ickes had a great deal of business, his time was valuable and he would not look at the trees unless I paid $85.00 for his time.
In advance. Any money would not apply to future services.

After I picked myself off the floor, I thanked her for her time and was grateful she didn't charge in advance.
The builder took care of the trees.
"I have reviewed the phone log for this period. We have no record of receiving a call from this person. We do not charge for quotes in the Fairhope area. We do charge $75.00 for consultation. The difference between them is a quote is when the client knows what they want performed and a consultation is when a client wants me to evaluate the trees and recommend care. I am an I.S.A. Board Certified Master Arborist and the only one in the state. I am an expert in tree care. It is only proper for me to change for my knowledge. Would you expect your doctor, vet, or mechanic to tell you what is wrong for free?"
