In any case, it turned out to be a great decision. Over a total of four visits, he was always on time, courteous and cheerful, worked tirelessly and quickly, and cleaned up after himself every time (and sometimes after the other workers who were less than thorough). With all the stuff that had to be done, there was only one case where he had to make a small additional hole (that wasn't for a new outlet). Since our kitchen is half original house and half old addition and we were also changing so many things, I had expected at least a few extra holes to patch up, but there was only the one (about the size of a racquetball). Overall, his work is neat and professional, with no corners cut. For example, out of principle (and asking first), he changed out an ancient light switch and moved an outlet about a foot farther away from the sink (it was right by it) for no extra charge. On the last visit, when he was there just to add the attic light and all the trim, I asked him about adding an outdoor outlet (I had put it off in case other costs came up since I knew it would be a bit pricey). He checked it out, gave me an estimate ($300), got the supplies, and added it that same day. At the end of it all, his estimates were exactly what I paid and I was very happy to pay it.
I definitely plan on using him in the future for all other electrical work and recommend him to everyone without reservation.
I wanted to premise this review just mention that I am a professional engineer by trade and I also hire electricians to do work on rental houses that I own. I tend to like things done right or not done at all. If I didn't like this company I wouldn't hesitate to say so. But NEXGEN explained everything as the work progressed, were amazingly knowledgeable about electrical code and their finished work was so neat and immaculate. I would even use the word meticulous. It was obvious the owner, Jacob Strouse, reads a lot about the electrical code and keeps up with all the new technologies/materials.
I took several bids on the electrical work but there was only one bid lower than NEXGEN's but by only a small amount. NEXGEN was willing to adjust theirs to better the lower bid. However, with all things being equal I know now the lowest initial bid wasn't really the lowest, because NEXGEN included during the construction several additional items at no extra charge that were not written in the other bid. And NEXGEN's quality was far superior. I know, because I had used the other company before.
As the house addition was being built NEXGEN did the work in generally two stages, rough in and completion. The work was done on time, and in an extremely professional manner. I was always able to talk to the owner at any time about changes, progress, alternatives etc....Some of the contractors I have worked with (or tried to work with) didn't always like to spend the time to answer questions and offer alternatives. (Especially when they might have to do something correctly which entailed more work on their part.) Not the case with NEXGEN.
There was one place where I didn't think we needed a light but NEXGEN said I did. Me being stubborn insisted no light. Now that the house is done, I wish I had put the light in. Listen to them, they have good advice!
NEXGEN wrote up the contract outlining everything to be done. The contract was in two stages and two payments. Let me reiterate only two payments. Only after the work was done did NEXGEN ask for payment. I have had many a contractor ask me for partial payments weekly etc....asking for money before it is due is to say the least unprofessional and I have found to be a red flag for problems.
In conclusion, I remember years ago when a subcontractor professional and quot;saidand quot; they were going to do something (and correctly), you could trust they would. I have increasingly found this to be a rare quality these days. NEXGEN still has that rare attribute.
