Interior Painting, General Remodeling
At the prodding of my realtor, the painter indicated he could perform all the tasks above in a three-day period, which I thought was unrealistic. A month later, some of the contracted work is still incomplete, although the contractor appears to think he is finished. The initial paint work was performed in very sloppy fashion by two individuals who were "temp hires" and showed up for part days. Their work was characterised by every flaw and shortcut possible in paint work. They did no prep work, did not fill holes, masked nothing, skipped priming many surfaces, left many prominent paint runs on walls and trim, roller marks on walls and ceilings, missed large areas entirely, spilled paint on furniture and on doors and woodwork they were not supposed to paint, etc. The paint on the kitchen cabinets had been applied initially with a roller, leaving an ugly, rough, textured finish. After I complained vigorously to the contractor, he replaced the "temp" painters with his "good" painters. While some aspects of the job turned out ok, such as the kitchen chair rails, overall, the whole of the work was amateurish, sloppy, and extremely fragile. Fragile as in much of the glossy varnished woodwork was never sanded or primed, and the single coat of cheap latex paint they applied is now peeling/falling off in many places. They neglected to finish painting some of the windows, incompletely painted one of the bathroom ceilings, hung some of the kitchen cabinet doors crooked, omitted hardware on some doors such that they don't stay closed. Contrary to their contract, they did little cleanup, leaving large amounts of paint on window panes, kitchen appliances, kitchen counters, sinks, doors and woodwork not intended to be painted, light fixtures, door knobs, bathroom wall tile, carport floor and walls, etc. When asked to rework shoddy work, they did initially respond, but always with shortcuts, poor results, and never addressed all issues identified to them. As time went on, it has become increasingly difficult to get them to come back and finish/correct their work. My mistake, other than hiring them in the first place, was to pay them before the work was complete.
