ALABAMA TOP HAT CHIMNEY SWEEPS

Installation day. I have to provide an extra blanket to protect carpet. A new fireplace floor is put in and old grate is taken out. A new back wall is NOT installed. I am told can't install a cut is necessary because a bump was found in the floor... I asked why bump was not found on inspection day and he said he would have needed a level... He also says one leg may be used because the gas starter is in the way? It will be an additional $25.00 for the cut. He says he will try to come back in morning or whenever he can get the cut made, he hopes guy will be around in morning. I asked if he could call guy and find out because I can not keep taking off work. He borrowed my phone, drove to have cut made and returned. (He later complained about having to drive 20 miles to make cut.) He arrives with a piece of black metal and 2 legs. I realize now the wall is not being replaced but something is going to be propped up in front of cracked wall. Resembles a rough hewn Pennsylvania fire back. This is NOT what I ordered. I would not have agreed to a painted piece of steel with legs of different color and lengths. I explain that I ordered a WALL not a propped up fireback. I have him halt the work and call my husband to come home. Wes is yelling how he had been in business for 34 years, he was the professional (blah blah blah). My response was if he was such a professional why did he not bring a tape measurer, make sure the floor was level and get his measurements wrong. I drew a diagram to illustrate how his measurements were wrong. I measure the newly cut fireback 19" tall. He ordered 27" by 27". Twenty seven inches minus 19" tall is an 8" difference. Eight inches off of original measurement is significant. To be generous I then deduct 1.5" off or the raised floor, which is raised more than he originally thought due to the hidden bump not found because of lack of level. OK now we are still 6.5" off from his original measurement. I then add 2" for the legs, still 4" off from his original estimate. My point to him was this is NOT what I ordered BUT IF I had of ordered it ...would have been 4" WRONG. He then states you can't order these height/width and that Pennsylvania fire backs are around $700.00 I go online to check. You can order different widths and heights so the cutting was still unnecessary he just did not measure correctly. I also see I can get free shipping, and they are much cheaper and nicer (fluer de lis, patterns, etc) than the plain $190.00 one he brought. We paid him for the work he did (cleaning and new floor) but said we could not pay the $190.00 for what we did not order. He left with fireback, legs and check. At door he mentioned he was a millionaire and was going to sue. Now we still don't have a safe fire wall and will probably have to have new floor ripped out once we find someone to do the work. Nightmare.
