In fall of 2010 I started having water come in around the fireplace and run down the wall. I contacted several brick contractors and received quotes of over $1000 to "repair" fireplace and to repair dry wall. They tried adding mortar to all of the cracks in the fireplace bricks and to seal the metal exhaust of the fireplace. None of the repairs fixed the leaking. I finally got up on the roof and sprayed the roof with water hose and found that the water was actually coming in through the flashing under the shingles around the fireplace, not the bricks or fireplace.
When I called them two years later they promptly showed up and investigated the leak. They owned up to the issue and corrected the problem, which is what an A+ company does. Continental was very professional and quickly fixed everything under warranty, including the drywall damage and damage to the fireplace
mantle.
"Thank you for your input. Our records show that we installed this roof in 2008 for a [member name removed], because it was made know to us the house was being sold we allowed a transfer of warranty. According to our records we went out in March 2010 and found no leak present. We would very much like to have the names of the numerous contractors reached and reports to substantiate members claim . According to our records we have not heard from member since March 2010. With regard to the claim of wavy roof our thoughts are that this is a structural decking issue found on every roof in the state of Alabama. It is an issue that comes up so often that we include it in our What To Expect handout when we inspect a roof. We have never installed a roof that would need the drastic solution of a full replacement. "The numerous contractors" are trying to sell something that is not needed. We are constantly fulfilling our warranty obligations. There is no reason to believe that we would not fulfill this one if it were a warranty issue. Owner's direct cell phone number is on our website, it is very easy to contact us."
Where it really gets bad is a year or so later we started to see signs of water intrusion near the chimney. It progressively got worse as I tried to diagnose the problem myself and address. Finally, I decided I needed to have someone come in and remove shingles and siding from around the chimney to find out where the water was coming from. I first approached Continental since they did the work and asked whether or not they would cover it if there was a problem found. I was told that this job was not warrantied; nevertheless I thought if there was an obvious installation issue they would "own up". The rep that I called agreed to meet me at my house at a designated time to inspect the chimney. I took off of work (30 minutes away) on a Friday, drove home and nobody showed up. I had the gentleman's cell phone number and called repeatedly leaving a voice mail a couple of times. No response. Not on Friday, not through the weekend, not until the next week when I called the office and complained and even then it took quite a bit of time for them to get back to me.
At that time, I decided to call a more reputable company to come perform the work. When they did they found that the flashing on the back side of my chimney was "pieced together" as if whoever put it up didn't want to take the time to go to the home improvement store and buy a single sheet of flashing. It was a very "rigged" job with seams for leakage and it didn't extend far enough up the chimney, Long story short, it cost~$1000 to fix the problem and repair the drywall. I called Continental to see if they'd be willing to cover some of the cost. Of course, they wouldn't call me back until I threatened to go on Angie's list and tell my story. When the gentleman called me back he would not take any responsibility saying that they did not replace the flashing or shingles but only replaced the siding on the chimney. While I agreed that might be true as I did not remember if they did anything with the flashing, I do know that they stripped my chimney completely bare (and I happen to believe they did the flashing too). Nevertheless, even if they didn't install the flashing there's absolutely no way that the individual doing the work did not see the pieced together flashing and if he was reasonably good at his job he would know that something needed to be done.
Bottom line, these guys consistently showed the inability to be punctual or responsive. The work they did was wrought with problems, and in the end they refused to acknowledge any responsibility for it. Absolutely no way I would ever use them again or recommend them!
"We completed work in May of 2012. Our records show that the total of two jobs where $6,092.15. There were problems with the original crew as the member stated. As the member stated we did follow up with another crew and resolved the issues. With regard to the warranty. As the member stated, he purchased a foreclosure. This house has 4,000square feet plus of roof. Very steep, with multiple dormers and valleys. Many valleys routed to second story walls. We did not do any roofing at all. We cannot take on a warranty under these circumstances. It is our experience with this type of roof, that when you stop water in one area it will find another area to penetrate. The fact that the area that we worked on did not leak for "a year or so" tells us that the problem was not with our work. We offered to try and diagnose the leak. I think it is unreasonable for the member to expect us to do this without a charge. I had a house built four years ago and it's been out of warranty for three years. If something goes wrong with my house I do not expect the builder to repair it at no cost. We have no way of knowing what was done on the roof. We have no pictures, we have no documents. Don't know who the contractor was, don't know if what he did was part of the original scope of work that we were to perform. Further I take offense that we are not a "reputable company". We have thousands of customers to our credit and the overwhelming of them very satisfied with our work. I drive a Ford Escape that is wrapped with our company info on it. I'm very proud of our company! Do we make mistakes? More than I wish. However we always stand behind what we do. I have my cell phone number on our website, inviting people to call that may have an issue with what we do. We maintain an A+ rating with the BBB. With the volume of work we have completed that is a very big accomplishment. We work very hard to do the very best we can do."
The real problems with their work are with the siding repair. To date the job is still uncompleted. The representative I had been dealing with said twice someone would be out to complete the work. Now I am told he no longer works for the company. I have called their office twice since. The first the receptionist said someone would be in contact with me in a few days. The second I had to leave a voicemail. I hope is is resolved soon.
Update to above:
The next business day after I posted my review I was contacted by Continental asking how they could resolve the problems with my siding. We arranged a time to meet so I could show them the problem and the work was completed to my satisfaction in about a week. Still no known probllems with the roof.
The response from Continental to my earlier review is true and accurate.
And I have the same question to Angie's List "Why is is so difficult to remove a review, especially by the ORIGINAL reviewer???
"We have talked to customer and he stated that he was very happy with our work. This review was meant for another contractor. He is upset with Angie's list because of this. We have been trying to correct this since last week. I also wonder why it has not been corrected. It seems that it could be removed as easy as it was posted."
The second problem was that my A/C lines were damaged during the installation. They did provide a 'What to Expect' handout that stated that the customer was responsible for checking the distance between the line and the roof. I did inspect it but I missed an 8 inch long area of the line that was too close. They refused to take responsibility for any of the damage since they provided the handout to me in advance. The signed contract made no mention of the responsibility of A/C damage falling on my shoulders. They treat the handout as a legal document even though you do not sign it. If you use them make sure you do all the steps 100% correctly.
The third problem was that the owners were condescending and combative when they contacted my wife about the A/C issue. In my conversations they were more professional but they refused to compromise at all. I would have been satisfied with splitting the cost of the A/C repair with them ($500) but they were not willing to even take $250 off the roofing bill.
The fourth problem was after the job was over they left materials in my driveway for 4-5 days after I had paid them in full for the job. I finally had to call the salesperson and tell him that my driveway was not their storage facility.
The fifth problem is that I am still finding nails around the perimeter of my house over time in areas near bushes that were not passed over adequately with the magnet. I realize they cannot get every single nail but it is still frustrating.
The sixth problem was that the final cost of the job was 10% more than was given to me in the initial estimate.
To close I will say that the roof is functional with no leaks or loose shingles that I can see. The roof was replaced quickly (2 days) and the workers who performed the job were polite and hardworking. Aside from the temporary storage and nail issues the cleanup was sufficient. However, given all the other issues I would not recommend them.
"Thank you for the review. I would like to start out by saying that this job was close to five years ago. The customer filed a BBB complaint against us that only included the A/C issue. We did respond. We felt that our explanation was reasonable. The first problem of color. We provide samples for the customer to choose from. They pick the color and we install what they pick. With regard to the question of quality, we only use first run quality shingles from a reputable manufacturer. In this case GAF. We are a MasterElite roofing contractor with GAF. Only 2% of all Alabama roofers and only 3% of US roofers qualify for MasterElite status with GAF. They have very stringent criteria. Going back to the A/C lines. We inform our customers of this up front. This customer stated that we informed him. It is unfortunate that the blame of other contractors doing a poor job is being directed towards us. The installation of A/C lines, electrical lines or plumbing lines directly under the roof deck defies common sense. In northern Alabama there is a very good chance that a home will need a new roof at some point. It is also against building codes in many areas of the US. The cost and burden of this should be directed to the responsible party. That is not the roofer. We can only inform the customer of this and that is what we do. It is up to the customer to hire a professional to inspect or choose to do it themselves. With regard to the legal issue raised by customer. The fact that the customer stated that he was informed and that he went so far as to inspect the attic, I do believe this will act as a verbal contract if it were to be contested. We are not trying to be condescending or combative. We do see a need to state the facts. We have done thousands of roofs with thousands of satisfied customers. We maintain an A+ rating with the BBB of all of Alabama. With our "What to Expect Form" we try to inform our customers of all the issue's that can occur during a roofing project. I just cannot pay for something that is not our responsibility. With regards to problems four and five. We do not show any record of a bad clean up. We were however installing 10-15 roofs a day in the summer of 2009. If we missed a clean up that is on us and I do offer to send someone over to do a thorough clean up job, especially if the customer is sill finding nails after five years. With regard to problem six. Our record shows that we submitted a supplemental for an additional four squares of shingles that the insurance company shorted on the original measurements. This should have been paid by the insurance company. They would have sent this to the customer. At the time we were not informed if this did not occur. On an insurance claim, customers are only responsible for their deductible. That is our policy and this is stated on the customers paperwork. Again thank you for the opportunity to state our side of this."
"Dear Mr [member name removed], Thank you for you review and thank you very much for your business. It was a pleasure serving your roofing needs."
"Thank you [Member name removed] for taking the time to give us a review. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve your roofing needs."
"Thank you [member name removed] for your response and the opportunity to serve your roofing needs."
More emails later, the owner still refused to look at our roof and put a lien on our property, saying we refused to pay the balance because we just didn't want to pay for the roof. I finally had to send through a 50th email a copy of the final payment check and told the owner if he wanted the final payment he had to come look at our roof. He came out and looked at the roof and did agree that there were some things on the roof that could have and should have been done differently but did not offer to do anything about them. We just said take the lien off and take your money and we would never, ever recommend them to anyone here in Anniston EVER again. The Company has since left the Anniston area, but still operate out of Huntsville Alabama.
I would pay a little more than ever use this company for anything period. If you want to see an example of their work, come look at our roof. The pool liner has since been replaced. The owner and the Company could have had a good review if they had just done one thing......Take Care of your customer.
"There are many misrepresentations in this review. As an owner I was very involved in this. With regard to the contract, the fact that the customers state that we have a 30% cancellation fee tells me that they still have not read the contract. We only do business with people of legal age and able to understand basic contracts. If the customer would read the contract they would realize there is nothing sneaky. Part of our service is to work with insurance companies to maximize customer claims and minimize customer out of pocket expense and to install the proper roof the customer is entitled to from their insurance company. Sometimes this is easy, sometimes the insurance company does not make it so easy. Our contract states CLEARLY that if we work out everything with the insurance company we are the roofer! This is what we have done over 6,000 times with other customers without issue. There was nothing wrong with the roof. It was perfect and both owners agreed. Every home in our area and probably in most areas have dips between rafters and thin decking. This is a product of the original construction of the home. I cannot change this with a thin piece of Asphalt Roofing. Most customers do not see this imperfection in their roof until they get a new roof. So again we provide a sheet in our customer presentation that is called a "WHAT TO EXPECT" form. Each customer acknowledges that they have read and understand our what to expect policy. Prior to roof installation. We try to inform customers about what is going to happen during roof installation. Dips in decking is an item in that form. There are thousands of nails that come off a roof when it is being re-roofed and we do our very best to minimize nails left. We get most, however, I can never promise to get all. We strip all our roofs to check for rotten decking, then we install all new felt, then shingles. Initially this is messy but in the long run it makes for a better roof. If ONE NAIL got in an above ground pool right next to the roof and the customer knew it I wish they would have gotten it out. We were provided no proof that the pool had a leak. It was full of water when I was there.? We are still doing very good business in the Anniston, Oxford and Jacksonville Al area. We did $100,000.00 in roofs there just last month. I went out and addressed all this with [member name removed] and [member name removed] over a year ago. Before I left one of the customers inquired about working for us because he just lost his job with Target. I find it hard to believe he would want to work for our company if it is as bad as his statements. I had to file a lien to get paid. We provided a settlement discount of $339.00 just to move past this job. In hindsight I wish I would have pursued legal action to get all my money. Customers agreed that this would solve all issues and that if I would release the lien they would consider the matter closed. I think at this late date customer is on a vendetta mission. This is very unfortunate. Butch Buis Owner, Continental Roofing Company, LLC For Quality, Value and Superior Customer Service Continental Roofing is on top of it!"
I wanted to use them again for some siding work but the quote was higher than we were comfortable with.
