Update: I never heard back from them the next day either.
It did not "go" with this provider. However, I would give Ted's Plumbing a AAA rating
They said they would come out the same day I called. They showed up about an hour later and went through the house checking for any items that may leak.
Myself I work in the field service business making repairs. One thing I've learned is to never take the customers word on what they said they checked. Customers miss things.
True to good troubleshooting procedure, they went through and checked everything out for themselves; but not before they covered their boots with slip covers.
The next step was for them to check under the house. Before they went under the house they told me that to check a crawl space they would have to charge a service fee for going under the house. They asked if I was okay with the fee. I told them to do what they needed to do find the leak.
They crawled under the house and didn't find any leaking pipes. Thats when they decided to add a shut off valve under the house. One to help isolate the problem and two because everyone needs a shutoff valve under the house for maintenance purposes. They told me there wouldn't be an added charge for the shutoff valve install as the craw space fee would cover it.
They had a shutoff valve installed in like 5 minutes.
One of the guys told me he noticed the wall to the front of the house was really wet. He said he suspected that the water leak was right outside the front of the house. He also told me that the water line was running through the HVAC ductwork. (Which was true) He told me how that is very bad and the metal on metal contact is causing the pipe to wear out. One day the pipe would burst.
We went to the front of the house to check.
I had already dug up half my yard tracing down the water line and looking for a leak. They gave me three options. One They could dig up the area they suspected was where the water was leaking from and fix just the leak. Two they could finish digging up the yard and would only charge me half of the normal digging fee because I had dug up the yard half way, then replace the whole water main going into the house. Three, if I wanted to save more money they would let me dig the rest of the yard up and not charge me for digging at all. I had done all the digging I wanted to do and I know that with 30+ year old water lines, it's best just to replace them.
They gave me two quotes. $400 and something to dig up the spot and repair the line. $1150.00 and they would finishing digging up the yard and run new Pec line that would be rerouted around the HVAC ductwork instead of through it.
I went with the full water main replacement.
They had to leave to pick up their excavator to finish digging up the yard and take care of some other service calls. They came back a few hours later and got right to work.
I told them I was sorry if I was bothering them just hanging out watching everything they did. I explained that I find this kind of stuff fascinating. They shrugged it off and explained I wasn't bothering them. They told me everything they were doing as they were doing it. As a natural do-it-yourselfer, I loved learning everything they were doing. I liked that they let me hang around and didn't seem to be the least bit bothered with me watching or asking a bunch of questions.
They dug out a trench where the water line was. They found the where the pipe had been leaking. They stopped and asked if I wanted them to continue replacing the water line or just repair the broken pipe. I told them to continue replacing the water line.
They pulled out an old faucet that was attached to the old main line. They came over and said the faucet looked old and worn out. They said they were going to go ahead and replace it. No extra cost for that.
They had the new water line run through pretty quick. One of the guys even called me over to show me how the crimper works on the Pec water line.
They put all the dirt back into the hole, even the dirt I had dug up. They went over afterwards and put hay down to cover up the muddy area.
Great guys to spend the day hanging out with. It cost me a lot of money, but it could have been a lot worse. They made it seem like money well spent. Very professional and friendly. I hope I won't need their services anytime soon. But if I do, I wouldn't have a problem calling them up again.
When the crew from Welch Plumbing came out they advised me that I had several (about 10) leaks in my lines. Remember the older house? They told me that if I had 3 or less they could fix but with that many the recommended me to replace the lines. I agreed and they did an excellent job! Each time they had to come into the house they insisted on wearing booties over their shoes even though I told them it was not necessary on my part. I have a gas stove top and water heater. They installed new connections for each of these with quick cut offs. I am very pleased with the work. It has been over a year since they installed the new gas lines and I have had no problems.
WHAT THEY DIDN'T TELL ME UP FRONT was that they would get out there and "estimate" approximately $900 for the tests ALONE to be able to "actually estimate" the repairs. They were also extremely late; they said the originally scheduled technician was sick, and I understand that, but that doesn't mean SOMEONE couldn't pick up a phone to tell me something to that effect as opposed to me just waiting at the foreclosed home.
So, after they missed my appointment I had to call them, after waiting 45 minutes past my appointment time, and then they sent a new tech out. They were very apologetic and I confirmed that the estimation would be now $40 over the phone because I had to write a check to leave with my fiance, I was apparently "confused", but they waived the $8 when the tech arrived due to the lateness. I left my fiance to deal with them since I had to go to work at that point (which is why I scheduled an appointment in the first place, because I have to work). My partner called me frantic saying they wanted $500 to air test the pipes and $398 to test the gas lines. I haven't even bought the house yet, there's NO WAY I could pay that to get just an estimate to fix the house with NO REPAIRS being done yet.
Needless to say they took my $40 check and didn't do anything that couldn't have been told to me over the phone so I was charged basically for someone to drive out there and waste my time. When I called to complain they said their policy is "not to give quotes over the phone". Not surprising; if you tell someone they'll be paying say $900 just to test then you'll get hung up on I guess. I left a message for the owner as well but haven't received a call.
Very disappointed. Will never use again. I do not like that they are not upfront about their costs.
