I have mixed feelings about Huntsville Automotive. The mechanics are skilled, the ladies in the front office are pleasant and they are less expensive than the dealership. Most of that is expected from any independent garage. The issue is they take too many liberties and prop themselves up as doing you an favor. I?m paying for a service. Example ? purchased a used Volvo XC90 and wanted to have it completely checked out and the oil changed. An oil change, a few light bulbs and a hose later was $1000 but, I had a clean bill of health. 4,500 mile later I have an oil leak and a noise in the front, all of which I have diagnosed on internet bogs but want the experts to diagnosis. An oil change and two hundred dollars later they confirmed what I found on the internet in 15 minutes. With no cost estimate for the noise and a worst case cost estimate for the leak of $2100. I have two other examples but you get the point. I gave them a C for punctuality because you will end up calling them and and you need to pull information but one of the owners was nice enough to meet me on a Sunday to drop off my car, which was great customer service. I sold the car. I won?t say don?t go to them but expect to be treated like an idiot and dismissed
Response from Huntsville Automotive Inc
"Good Morning, I do appreciate your feedback and hope that you will give me the opportunity to discuss this matter further to ensure no loose ends are left untied. I pulled your service history and see that the initial service of $954.54 was a little more than what you had mentioned, it seems we installed 14 different parts on your vehicle to bring it up to a safe mechanical point. If too many liberties were taken by my staff I would like to know about it so I can ensure we make corrective actions to ensure it doesn't happen to future customers. Per our shop policy we charge a $79.95 diagnostic charge and any additional repairs should have been discussed with you and approved by you before the repairs were completed. On the second visit 5 months and over 5,000 miles later we performed an oil change by your request and diagnosed a noise and oil leak. The oil leak was quoted as Camshaft Seals which require extensive engine work to replace. The noise was diagnosed as a rusty hub/wheel contact point (common to newer Volvo XC90's). We disassembled and cleaned this rust and reassembled the vehicle. If this issue was not corrected then this would be covered under our in house warranty and taken care of. I do value my customers input and if this information is not correct please contact me anytime so we can further discuss this issue. Customer satisfaction is my number one priority. Thanks Adam Watson Owner"

I chose to have Huntsville automotive do maintenance the dealership wanted too much money for. I had taken my car to the dealership to replace a recalled power steering hose. The very knowledgeable and polite secretary was able to schedule me for a service appointment the same day. The mechanics noticed the dealership had spilled power steering fluid and gave me an honest explanation and assessment of my automatic transmission.

I have been very pleased with Huntsville Automotive for all of the repairs they have made to my Volvo S40. First of all, you can tell that they know what they are talking about (Certified Volvo Master Technician) and they take the time to explain everything to you until you fully understand the ramifications of the work you need done. Also, they are not in business to rip you off. Case in point, I had an exhaust issue on my car and they referred me to an Exhaust Repair specialty shop since they felt they were better equipped to make the repair than they were. The Exhaust specialty shop charged me $80 for the repair and the Volvo dealership wanted over $500. After using Huntsville Automotive for the past two years, my Volvo runs better than it has in years and I feel confident I can get many more miles out of it. This is the only place I will take my vehicles to get serviced in the Huntsville area.

During a brake job at the Firestone on Redstone Arsenal, the tech working on my car said he noticed some play in the water pump and that the bearings were probably going out. They recommended I have it replaced to the tune of $375 with a cheap aftermarket part (I looked up the part# from the invoice). I decided to get a second opinion from Huntsville Automotive after reading the reviews on Angies List. After about 15 minutes at the shop, the service writer (Matt) came back and said they couldn't see or hear anything wrong with the water pump, but my tag light bulbs were out.  They didn't see any need to replace the water pump, but did work up a quote for me after I specifically asked them to. Their normal diagnostic fee is $89.95, but I was not made aware of this before they took my vehicle back. They only charged me $40 this time, which I though was more reasonable considering they didn't have to pull any codes or test drive the vehicle. I feel they are trustworthy since they could have just as easily said the water pump needed to be replaced and earned a quick $350-$400. I will use certainly consider them for my future auto service needs.

It was good. There's nothing too traumatic about that. They've done some my work on my Suburban and I was really happy with it. They're very knowledgeable.

After Huntsville Automotive had my car for three days was told by the rep there was some kind of a communication error between my cars connector and my cars computer ( not their computer ).   To get the codes would require them to track everything down manually to the tune of a least $200+ without any guarantee of success.  I declined their offer and was charged the standard investigative fee.    After getting the car back I used the old mechanics trick of a paperclip to jump the connectors to get the readings.  The computer went through the self diagnostic fine and gave me the codes.   I'm betting they did not have the connector right as the diagnostic port was upside down from its usual position.  Later when I happened to need codes pulled again I stopped by AAMCO that did work for me previously and they pulled out an old ODBC 1 hand reader, hooked it up and gave me the codes.   I feel that Huntsville Automotive tried in good faith to get the codes and check things out.  Now my car is older a 1992 Buick LeSabre with 130,000 miles and perhaps Huntsville Automotive is setup for newer cars as this is a newer shop.   I must say however if a shop cannot do something as simple as pulling check engine codes how would they do on a more complex repair?  I guess the consumer would have to be the judge.
