McDaniel Window & Door Co

On October 30, 2024, my husband and I paid McDaniel Window & Door (Florence, AL) $18,157.03 by personal check for windows and doors. The check was cashed immediately. Nearly a year later, we?ve received nothing ? no product, no refund, no response. McDaniel gave vague, contradictory excuses (like ?shipping damage?) and then went silent. We filed a BBB complaint, and McDaniel promised a refund via cashier?s checks but never followed through. The BBB confirmed McDaniel stopped responding. After a full year and even attorney involvement, we still have no refund or accountability. This company?s conduct is unethical and deceptive. Beware.

McDaniel Window and Door has been locally owned and operated in the Shoals area for over 47 years. Under the operation of Mike McDaniel, the company had a well-known reputation for good quality product, installation, and customer care service. When I chose McDaniel for my recent installation, this is the man and the company that I thought I would be doing business with. I was wrong. Mr. McDaniel is no longer involved in the day-to-day operation. Now it is being run by his stepson Woodard F. Watkins. Mr. Watkins is the co-owner, Vice President, and Salesperson of McDaniel Window and Door. He “personally” handles all aspects of your order from start to finish including window measurements, estimated quotes, order placement, shipping, scheduling, and warranty issues. I wish that I had known this beforehand and had done my research, not only into McDaniel Window and Door but of Woodard F. Watkins as well (complaints, reviews, ect). Because if I had known then what I know now, I would never have entrusted my project to this man or to this company. My personal experience with Mr. Woodard Watkins and McDaniel Window and Door was one of delays, poor communication, conflicting information, poor customer service, and a poor-quality window installation. After what I experienced and the way that I was treated by Mr. Watkins, I would never recommend doing business with McDaniel Window and Door to anyone. I trusted that McDaniel Window and Door would do a quality install and treat my home with respect and care. A decision I deeply regret. I put my faith in the wrong company and the wrong man. On September 8, 2023, I placed an order with Mr. Watkins for installation of 10 replacement windows at a cost of $8275.00. The lead time for the windows Mr. Watkins quoted me was 3 weeks. Thirteen weeks later, on December 12, 2023, McDaniel Window and Door installed eight of the ten replacement windows. Two windows were missing from the order along with 3 window screens. On December 14th and 16th, I contacted Mr. Watkins to address problems with the installation and that I was not happy with the final product, the quality, or the service that I received: 1. The installers left debris in my yard such as insulation, glass shards, wood, and plastic. They failed to use drop cloths and protective footwear as I was told that they would when working inside the home. As a result, there was damage to my hardwood flooring (chips, scratches, black sticky residue stains). 2. All eight window frames are bowed or curved at the base of the frame. I feel this is a result of strain from improper fit, poor installation, and incorrect measurements. 3. Dented Damaged areas on some of the frames 4. Water Leakage at the base of semicircular transom window I have continued to reach out to Mr. Watkins to request that the window frames be repaired, replaced, or refund in full. It has been over two months since my installation, and the remaining two windows still have not been installed nor have the problems with the window frames been repaired or replaced. I feel this is a breach of contract and failure to honor the warranty. I have asked for a full refund at this point, which I have not received.

I just want to give you a heads up about Mcdaniels Windows. DO NOT USE THEM. I ordered $15,000 of windows and doors from them three months ago. Ever since the day I paid for the items, I have gotten the runaround, no responses, no return calls and no returned emails. I finally had to go in the store to talk to Woodard because he would never return my calls or emails. Two weeks ago, I was told everything would be delivered last week. Nothing has been delivered, nor has anybody contacted me. Once again, I sent Woodard an email and there’s been no reply. I called the store this morning at 9:30 and Chris said he would have the lady called me back that was Scheduling delivery. At 11:30 I had not heard anything back so I called the store. The lady answered the phone and I explain to her that I needed an update on my order was. She said she couldn’t find my file that Woodard must have it. I explain to her, as I explain to Chris, this is a $15,000 order and I need to know what’s going on. She said she was just giving me the information that Woodard had given her about the delivery. At that point, I asked for the owner. She said Woodard is running things now. I said fine, call somebody, and have them call me back in one hour. An hour and 30 minutes later I have not heard anything. So I called the store again. She put me on hold for a long time. When she came back to the line, she said Woodard would be in contact with me. I said When? She said he will be in contact with you. I explained to her at this point that I am going to begin calling the better business bureau, Chamber Of Commerce, and letting all my friends and family know what is happening with Mcdaniels Windows And Doors. If any of you know who the actual owner is and how I may contact him or her, please share that information with me. On a $15,000 order like this, I would think I would get some kind of customer service. I am now beginning to wonder if they’re having financial issues and possibly going bankrupt. I am very stressed. I just want the windows and doors and that would be the best solution for all.

They were so fast and very clean. They cleaned up everything when they left, they left my house looking better than when they came in.

Window looks great!

The salesperson was punctual and courteous. Our windows were ready on schedule; the installation crew was professional, efficient, and finished in on time. The quality of the windows is not quite what we expected, but they are acceptable. We were disappointed that many of our new windows were left with a sticky, glue-like substance on them - and the guys got caulk on some of our wooden blinds. Cleaning the new windows was a time-consuming and labor-intensive job. The salesperson did bring a can of "goo-gone" to the house when we had difficulty removing the sticky substance from the windows. We feel like the company should have sent the installation crew back out to clean-up... but no such luck.
Overall, we were satisfied with our experience - but McDaniel could definitely work on being more attentive to detail. We used another company when we had windows replaced at a previous home... they left us in much better shape and provided a superior product. In the future, I will pay a higher price to have that company complete work for us instead of settling for an average product and average service.

It knew if was fair pricing because I had checked with others around us. They are locally owned and operated. They were the most cost efficient. They came out, took the curtains down, put the new windows in, cleaned up after themselves and hung my curtains back up. The only complaint I have is that it took a long time to finish because they had to order the windows. It took about two months to finish.

We ordered the windows and several of the windows they ended up sending were missing the jams. The salesperson promised us one type of window and they sent us another. We didn't realize it of course, until after the windows had all been installed. We had to go to some extent on our part to get it fixed and to get the windows to all look like what was put in there.
They did make it right with us as far as giving our money back. We are happy with the windows.

They were very professional. They just gave me an overall price on the whole house and not individual prices on different windows. Some of the windows were bigger and some were smaller and they based their prices on actual size. I wasn't missing anything when they left, so they appeared to be extremely honest. They took their time on anything I mentioned that needed to be replaced or redone and did it. The windows are guaranteed for a lifetime against anything, and they will come back out and replace it even if I throw rocks through the lawnmower. I had one spring that was kind of bowed and stretched out. I told them about that and they promptly came back and fixed it. They did a real good clean up and the guys were all honest. I was real pleased with them.
