A representative of Motivated Movers came to my house, walked through, was shown everything that needed to be moved, and wrote an estimate for the cost of the move.
On the day of the move, two men arrived on time, but with a truck that was too small. "We can't get all this onto the truck," they said. "And we'd be overweight." I asked them to get another truck, and was told that this was the largest they had. Their suggestion was to get a second truck, for an additional $1.5K (approximate). I didn't have that kind of money, and I had to be out of the house on that day.
The two movers with the truck worked very hard and got as much onto the truck as they possibly could. We were happy to provide them with lunch and something to drink.
My problem is that the individual who provided the estimate grossly underestimated the volume of items needing to be transported and/or overestimated the capacity of the truck. In fact, there was LESS to be loaded on the day of the move than there was on the date when he walked through the house and wrote the estimate (much stuff had been taken to a garage sale and to the local mission). The net result was that I had to borrow a friend's truck and horse trailer, load as much as I could, and drive through the night to another friend's barn to offload the items (I would not have access to the new house for another week). In the end, I was not able to move all my furniture, having to leave some behind and make arrangements for the Salvation Army to pick it up the next day. Two weeks later I had to borrow another truck to move the items from that barn to the new house.
A representative from Motivated Movers called me a few days later. He offered no apology, saying only that the individual who wrote estimates was good at his job. There was no offer of help, no offer to do anything at all to rectify the situation.
When the truck arrived (on time) to deliver the household items to the new address, one individual was one who had loaded the truck. He worked very hard. I again went to Subway and brought them lunch and something to drink. The other individual was not as efficient or careful. When a box was labeled "Basement" he took it to the kitchen. Boxes labeled "kitchen" ended up in the bedroom or in the basement. One box was dumped all over the driveway, spilling various small items and tearing the cover off a photo album. The items were loosely thrown back into the box and then taken to the wrong location.
I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the process of writing an estimate and then providing a truck that they should have known would be too small to carry all the household items. No suggestion was ever made that a second truck might be necessary. This move turned out to be a total nightmare. I cannot in good conscience recommend this moving company to anyone
The movers showed up at my house on time and were able to load my fairly large apartment on the third floor to their truck in about an hour and a half. I was impressed by how quickly they worked and they managed to keep my things pretty dry considering it was raining. We then drove over separately to my new house to unload. They communicated well about where to put things and the unloading went very quickly. I realized after they left that two pieces of furniture had left ~1 foot long scratches on the hardwood floor which was frustrating but that was my only complaint.
I began by calling the company and speaking with Chris. I explained that I was looking for help with a local move, specifically with packing the kitchen, a huge library of books and the large furniture items associated with a 4 bedroom/3000 sf house.Chris asked a series of questions to try to get an estimate of the truck and team size to best meet my needs.
The reason I assigned a grade of "B" in the price category is that I think Chris underestimated somewhat the amount of "stuff" I was looking to have packed and moved. I therefore ended up paying a team of three men for 11 hours of work when I might have saved some money overall by hiring a 4-man team and having them get the job done in fewer hours. My recommendation to Motivated Movers is that when possible, they send an experienced employee to visit the customer and visually inspect the home and its contents in order to best anticipate the needs for each customer. While I answered Chris's questions honestly and with as much detail as I thought necessary, I think in the end, we underestimated the sheer amount of stuff we were hoping to have them move.
That said-- the team they sent was terrific. The were, courteous, professional and treated us, our home and our belongings with great care and respect. The asked questions, respected my wishes, and labeled boxes clearly, which makes a HUGE difference when unpacking them.
