It's an absolute disaster. Every single day, they were anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes late and consistently left every light on in the entire area and all the outside lights too. They consistently left doors open and have taught the pets that they can slip in as often as they want. They "finished" today, and the grouting of the kitchen backsplash is horrible, they've left grout all over my new cabinets, countertops, appliances. They've left wall grout on the floor. They put a very thin layer of sealer over a floor that they never cleaned. I'm not sure whether I should be thankful that the layer of sealer is so thin or angry that I have to figure out how to get it up, clean, and put more down. They didn't put the trim back around the window blaming it on the cabinet installer, but we later discovered it was broken. They tore up door trim and it had to be replaced at our expense. They tore up enough of the baseboard trim that we had to buy some, but they don't make the same stuff anymore, so we had to buy about $300 worth of baseboard trim and then they had the nerve to add $250 extra for it's installation, even though it was their fault for not removing it before they took the floor up. They left a whole mess of caulk behind on the baseboards, so we've had to try to get some of it off and just live with other places we couldn't get up. Speaking of pulling floors up, they were asked to go to the subfloor and tile. They claimed they did not take that into account when they quoted the price, so the price went up again when they were angry that I insisted that it go down to the subfloor. I did not want to step up from my hardwood floor to the tile. They quoted installing tile throughout all 4 rooms, but did not plan to tile under where the cabinets sit, but the cabinets were not going to be tall enough for the dishwasher to slide in, so they wanted us to purchase plywood for them to install under the cabinets instead of tiling under the cabinets. We declined, so they added an extra $250 to tile under the cabinets. They consistently quote too little for materials and constantly run low, but with some items they purchased way too much (a 72" piece of trim for a doorway when they only used 32" - they sell it in 32" and 36", so I don't know why they bought a 72" piece, but they kept it) They did that twice, with two different kinds of trim. They requested too many plugs, boxes, and covers for electrical, but then tried to keep those and a roll of electrical wire too. Installing one extra 20 amp circuit in the basement cost an extra $200.They originally quoted for moving a gas line, but then also charged for installing gas line. Technically they did install a gas line so legally I am required to pay them, but actually it should have been included since they moved it in the original quote. We were charged an extra $450 to install a sink, faucet, drain lines and water lines. Who doesn't include this on a kitchen remodel?! Bottom line: I wanted to fire them the very first day, they'd come in after saying they were going to do one room at a time and start with the kitchen but by the end of the day, we were under orders to get the house ready they were going to do it all at once. So 12 hours later, the nightmare had begun. I'm honestly thankful that it's almost over. They've been paid in full to a tune of 30% higher labor than quoted. And materials cost us three times as much as they estimated, they'll never be welcomed back at our house.
On another note, they want anything and everything they see that you have around. That started with my train table, but they didn't want to pay even 1/5 of what it cost to build, they wanted it for free. They wanted some extra carpet we had saved in the basement, they wanted extra boards and plywood we had. They wanted the stray dog that had shown up starving days before they started (they took her) and the hermit crab we bought on vacation at the beach (they took him). But that's all okay, they want it for free, but they'll leave their trash, drinks, cigarette butts, and more reminders of their intrusions. They'll use your paper plates, plastic spoons, cups, and you'll discover them in some area they never should have been.
Oh yeah, it was truly horrendous. It may take me months to find the garage, a year to get the house back in order and clean, but it won't matter. Every day is better without them here. I'm glad we had the work done, but there are lots of things we've learned in the process and not hiring this group is top of my list.
