When Mr. Kanellis first arrived at my home he was full of questions about my project (some of which were somewhat personal, and had nothing to do with installing tile). He even asked me if my house was a ?forclosure??hmmm, whaaaat?
Finally, we began discussions on the requirements of the tile job. I showed Mr. Kanellis around the house and explained the requirements of the tile job in each room. I also explained that I would be providing the material for the job (have accounts thru my business). I also let Mr. Kanellis know that I was looking for someone who could begin/complete this job right away because I faced a tight schedule.
We were not very far into the discussion of the project when I noticed Mr. Kanellis became somewhat ?quick tonged?, and ?combative?. All of a sudden it seemed that every detail we discussed was a problem?even the prep work which had been performed by a 30 year veteran in the home building industry became inadequate to him. I wasn?t sure if that was just his personality, or what?so I just continued with our discussion. We went thru all areas that I needed tile work done. It became evident during our discussion that Mr. Kanellis thinks very highly of himself.
At the end of our appointment, Mr. Kanellis agreed to prepare me a formal quote for the work we had discussed. I even agreed to pay him to remove and replace any previously constructed materials/workmanship that he felt did not meet his standard.
Then, in parting, he asked me the strangest question?.So, you woke up today and needed tile work done, so you called me?
Long story short?.After accepting a 13,000.00 quote (mainly because I was in a schedule crunch and he was available), Mr. Kanellis wrote me an email one day telling me he had something come up and would be unable to do my work.
?.I think I'll call it a blessing in disguise.
"I apologize for the experience that this member had, however, I wanted to take a moment to address his concerns. I met this individual promptly the same day he called. I viewed the areas that he wanted tiled and the products that he chose. I tried to educate him as to the repercussions he would face later down the line in reference to the inadequate preparations made by said "30 year veteran". No area met the tolerances or proper waterproofing set forth by the Tile Council of America. I expressed that it would have to be removed and start fresh. It’s basically akin to building a house on a bad foundation. So by the third day of our meeting I had worked up a step by step plan and an estimate. We talked on the phone and I said I will see if I can get some of my already scheduled projects moved in order to accommodate his I need this now schedule. After consulting with my clients, I was forced to withdraw. I emailed him my apologies and offered up another Angie's List provider that has more man power and would be a possible candidate to take on his project. The member continued to email me; however, at that point I refused to respond in a tit for tat exchange. I pride myself on my craftsmanship and customer service and if you have any questions or concerns about this situation please feel free to call me directly at (205) 492-7430. Thank you, John Kanellis"
