Daniel's Roofing

Daniel Bailey didn't have the most professional presentation, but he was very nice and very eager to accommodate my scheduling and budget.
Once the job started, it was clear that he knew his trade and had a reasonable work ethic. His employees, however, did not share these traits. When he was not on site to supervise, the work slowed down to a crawl despite the large number of people he brought on. As a result a job that should have taken no more than three days took over a week to complete. During that time, his truck was sitting in our driveway taking up space. It couldn't be moved because it had broken down there and he could not afford to fix it. This was not his fault, but it showed me he didn't have the resources to deal with setbacks, as was the case when he hit me up for an additional $100 for shingles.
He also failed to cover the roof when he left the site. At one point it started raining, and water was coming into the house. He came by to cover it up immediately after I called him, but damage had already been done.
As the job was coming to a close, I decided to inspect his progress. The roof decking repair we had discussed had not been done (that section was left to his underlings while he was away). He took up the new roofing over that section, replaced the decking and re-shingled it himself after I pointed this out. I later realized that the extra shingles he bought with my $100 did not match the ones already laid.
Several weeks later, after a hard rain, water started coming in where he had replaced a vent. He came to make repairs when I called him about it, but rain still came in afterward. The second repair call went unanswered (possibly due to the minutes running out on his pre-paid cell).
I would only recommend Daniel Bailey if you are under a very, very tight budget and have the time to supervise the entire project. Even then, you may still get some delays and sub-standard work.

UPDATE:  After observing leaks in the roof, we called another roofer to come out and diagnose the issue. Apparently, Mr. Bailey's crew did not install valley metal on the roof as was promised both verbally and in the contract. Attempts to contact him have gone unanswered, as all his phone numbers seem to be disconnected. A complaint was filed with the Better Business Bureau.
