My son took a spa motor in to have the seal replaced on the shaft.  He was told it would cost $10.00 to replace the seal.  He was called the following day and told that the fan was broken during the repair, and had to be replaced also.  It would be a couple of days before the fan would be in due to it having to be ordered.  He was contacted a few days later and told the repairs were done and it was ready to be picked up.  He was also told there would be a cost of $54.69.  He inquired as to why the price was higher and was told that he was responsible for the fan as well as the labor for installing it.  The fan was not broke when it was left to have the seal replaced.

I contacted Marie personally.  I explained the situation to her.  She informed me that the fan had to be broken to get to the seal.  I asked why we were not contacted upon discovering that the fan would have to be broken..  She had no answer.  I informed her that he was informed by Jonathan, that it was accidently broken. She then informed me that Kerri, her daughter, had taken the motor home with her for Jonathan, her Son-In-Law to fix.  He had to break the fan to fix it.  She then asked me what type of motor it was.  I told her I did not know but how could she assure me that the fan had to be broken if she was not aware of what type of motor it was.  I then asked if she would at least sell him the fan at cost and not charge him labor on it.  She refused.  He was charged $31.00 for the fan and $10.00 labor as well as the cost of the seal.  A total of $54.69

Response from

"We did not perform this work for Ms. (Member). The work was performed for her son, (Son), who resides at a different address and paid for the work himself. (Son) was informed of the total cost of the repair including the impeller before the work was performed. He agreed to the total by phone, and the impeller was ordered. After the repair was completed, and he questioned the need for the impeller, he was informed it was broken on purpose, not accidentally, in order to replace the seal. This is due to the design of the particular pump. They will not come apart without the impeller breaking."
