When I cam home that evening all of the windows had been installed and looked pretty good. What amazed me was how they did an estimated two day job in about 7 hours. I went back and looked at the quote and I think for one worker and a helper plus truck and some tools I had paid the outrageous rate of $276 per hour. I complained to Home Depot and they told me there was nothing that they could do as Greatland is an independent contractor. I complained to Greatland and got no where.
Later on when I opened one of the widows to let in a little breeze it was very difficult to get the window to crank closed. It was really hard and a much older person would never have been able to close the window properly. It was so hard I was worried that I would break the crank handle off. Because that one window was so difficult we have not opened any of the windows that they installed. I did not call Greatland to complain about how hard the windows are to open as I was so mad about the outrageous installation cost I did not want them near my house.
I work in engineering and construction so I have a wild idea of cost. One of the ways I have seen estimates done is a price NOT TO EXCEED a certain amount which in this case would have been some reasonable hourly rate for two days. Then the actual price that would be charged is for the hours worked including travel time to and from the job. I believe I tried telling this to Greatland, not sure, but regardless I feel I was charged at least twice as much as what it should have cost. I will never recommend Greatland for anything. Also I have never shopped at Home Depot since that experience. I expected Home Depot to have better quality contractors than what they recomended
I could be off on the date as it was probably two or three summers ago. I just kind of discovered Anie's List and I wanted to file a report on the outrageous price I was charged.
"You contracted with Home Depot for your new windows, not Greatland Construction & Siding. Greatland Construction & Siding is an authorized installer for Home Depot. The representative from Greatland who visited you at your home to measure the windows may well have estimated the time to perform the installation service at (2) days. We always try to under commit and over deliver. Your evaluation of cost divided by hours to equal $276 per hour fails to include other costs involved with this transaction. I will not attempt to break down all of our operating costs, but items like recruiting, initial training, ongoing training, advertising, office & yard rent, office support personnel, vehicles, maintenance, disposal, insurance, health care are a few. These are some of our costs without factoring in that Home Depot shares in the revenue and also has costs of their own. Our free enterprise system encourages you to take the opportunity to collect as many other competitive bids as you desire. Had you done that, you would know the price you paid Home Depot was not only fair, but well within the market price. I do not understand why you would not allow us the opportunity to inspect the windows/installation and determine why they are not working properly. Your problem seems to be financially motivated not workmanship. Your problem is not with us, it is with Home Depot. I have operated Greatland Construction and Siding for (17) years. During that time, many of our competitors have come and gone. We remain to take care of the over (10,000) customers that feel differently that you. Many are repeat and referral customers with a high level of satisfaction. You are attempting to adversely affect our good standing in the community, through Angie’s List, three years after the date of installation. I wonder if you considered the result of your comments may diminish the income of up to ten Anchorage employees and their families. None of them were involved with your project. All things considered, I am still willing to visit your home and inspect the windows and installation. Many times a simple adjustment is all that is necessary to correct a sticky window. If you are interested in working toward a solution, please contact our office @ 563-6331. Sincerely Michael Endres President"
